Kevin Costner, who played Montana landowner John Dutton in Yellowstone for five seasons from 2018 to 2023, told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie on June 17 that he might return to the show under the "right circumstances."

"I've supported that thing and I've loved it. It's been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances I think that all of us want. For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances." He said.

He added,

"Saying there's a chance, there's always a chance. I love the thing. You've got to be really clear about that."

Costner is currently promoting a project, the first part of his four-part movie series, Horizon, which is all set to hit the theatres on June 28. The actor received a standing ovation on May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival after a screening of Horizon: An American Saga.

Why did Kevin Costner leave Yellowstone?

While talking about the reason behind his exit from Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, Kevin Costner revealed the production on the show was constantly delayed despite him being ready to shoot whenever required.

"I did it for five years, and I wanted to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point, and I thought, that can't happen agian. It was well over a year. I thought I have to be in a position to make the things." He said.

He also added,

"Material has to be ready at certain times, and we weren't able to do that. After five years, I thought, I'm not going to do this. If we can get that, we can do that, and I'll do it."

During an interview with Deadline in May, Kevin Costner revealed he had drawn up a contract to play Dutton for the upcoming five, six, and seven seasons. However, after months of negotiating, the contract was changed to season 5A, which aired in 2022, and season 5B, which has yet to air. Costner also revealed that he hadn't shot 5B since there was no script.

In May 2023, Paramount announced the premature end of the US TV Show in November. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023, the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, said he was disappointed by Costner's exit,

“I’m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it.”

Sheridan also added that Kevin Costner is doing "special work in a lot of different works" and appreciated him for being prolific.

"He likes a lot of the things that I like, and the idea of us working together is not out of the question for me."

The show's creator mentioned that if Kevin Costner wants to work with him in the future, they might end up doing something together.
