Late actor Matthew Perry's overdose case has received an update as the trial for the so-called "Ketamine Queen" Jasveen Sangha and Dr. Salvador Plasencia is now set for 2025. The alleged ketamine dealer and the Santa Monica doctor have been charged with illegally supplying drugs to the Friends actor ahead of his death on October 28, 2023.
Both have notified a federal judge that they have agreed on the trial delay until next year. Variety reported that their trial was supposed to be in October, but it's now moved to March 4, 2025. US District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett has inked the joint trial's date. If both are found guilty, they are reportedly looking at decades worth of sentences behind bars, and even lifetime imprisonment for Sangha.
Sangha and Plasencia could face at least 10 years in prison in Matthew Perry's drug case
Per the filings related to Matthew Perry's death in October last year, US Attorney Martin Estrada alleged that Jasveen Sangha and Dr. Plasencia were two of the group of people who had "taken advantage" of the late Friends star's addiction "to enrich themselves."
They were arrested on August 15, among several others linked to the actor's death while he was in his Pacific Palisades hot tub. Sangha and Plasencia were accused of one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine.
As per the latest update, Estrada's office shared a statement as quoted in Variety:
"If convicted of all charges, Sangha could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a statutory maximum of life imprisonment. Plasencia would face up to 10 years in federal prison for each ketamine-related count and up to 20 years in federal prison for each records falsification count."
Sangha has now received additional charges, including five counts of distribution of ketamine and one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises. As for Plasencia, he has faced several charges. It includes seven counts of distribution of ketamine as well as two counts of altering and falsifying documents related to the federal investigation.
Two of the others reportedly arrested and charged for Matthew Perry's overdose case are Erik Fleming and Kenneth Iwamasa, the late actor's live-in assistant. They will have their own hearings, which are scheduled for October 30 and November 6, respectively. The alleged ketamine queen is still in police custody, while Plasencia, Fleming, and Iwamasa have posted bond and are currently free.
Dr. Chavez, another person charged in Matthew Perry's case, made his initial court appearance last week. He is also expected to enter a guilty plea in the coming weeks, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.
Previously, Dr. Plasencia was allowed to reopen his practice in Malibu Canyo Urgent Care after posting bail. However, he's now barred from prescribing patients with controlled substances like ketamine.
