Maya Rudolph is known for her political satire and comedy and her character's affectionate nickname is Mamala on the show.

After Joe Biden opted out of the presidential race and Harris took his place as Trump's contender in the upcoming elections, fans have been speculating about Rudolph's return on SNL 2024.

Following social media buzz, CNN reported on July 31 that the acclaimed comedian is slated to return to play her popular role in the forthcoming season of Saturday Night Live. However, representatives of Rudolph and NBC have not responded to the request for comment on the news by CNN.

Maya Rudolph first potrayed Kamala Harris on SNL in 2019

Maya Rudolph's memorable portrayal of Kamala Harris on December 21, 2019, during an episode hosted by Eddie Murphy gained attention and became a popular meme. This contributed to solidifying Rudolph's place in the genre of political satire.

Rudolph reprised her role again in 2020 alongside Jim Carrey as Joe Biden. For her incredible performance on the show, she bagged a Primetime Emmy Award for guest actress in a comedy series.

The comedian and actor returned as Harris several times following the 2020 election. Her portrayal of Harris during her hosting stint on SNL in March 2021 earned her a second Emmy for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

When Kamala Harris was announced as the new contender in the Presidential race following Joe Biden’s departure, SNL fans started asking whether Maya Rudolph would feature in the upcoming season, which will cover the presidential election. Much to the delight of fans, their wishes have been granted. Maya Rudolph will reprise her 2020 role once again for the new season.

Although NBC representatives have not officially confirmed the news, Deadline reported on July 31, 2024, that the third season of Rudolph’s Apple TV+ comedy series Loot, has been pushed back. Loot was supposed to begin production on August 26, but production was rescheduled to accommodate Rudolph's shoot for SNL.

Political comedy on SNL

Saturday Night Live is known for its quirky political comedy and satire. Over the decades, it has been able to elicit laughter from its audiences by inviting numerous actors and comedians to impersonate politicians or make fun of them during elections.

The late-night comedy show brought in Dana Carvey as ex-president George H.W. Bush; Darrell Hammond as ex-president Bill Clinton; Will Ferrell as ex-president George W. Bush; and Fred Armisen as ex-president Barack Obama. In fact, in following years, Baldwin's portrayal of Trump alongside Jason Sudeikis' and Jim Carrey's impersonations of Biden also proved to be fan favorites on the show.

In 2008, alum Tina Fey dropped in to play Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and in 2019, Matt Damon appeared as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
