Molly Kearney confirmed that they will not be returning for Season 50 of Saturday Night Live. The comedian took to their official Instagram page on Friday, August 2, to share the news of their departure, saying:
"Ya'll that's a wrap on my time on SNL!"
While Kearley was reflective of their "amazing 2 seasons" in the show, fans were sad about their departure. Netizens shared their two cents about the comedian's exit and what it means for the upcoming 2024-25 run of the iconic sketch show. One X user commented:
'Not a great look SNL, losing another LGBT+ cast member before the season starts. It's a shame that SNL never really gave Molly a shot to get on air, because the few moments of them we got are really solid."
More fans took to X to lament over Molly Kearney's exit from the sketch show. However, some netizens, while sad about the news, weren't too shocked about Kearney leaving the show as they shared that they had seen it coming.
"Unfortunately this is not surprising, too bad, they really would have made a great Vance," another commenter said.
"This one I saw coming unfortunately. Untapped potential for Them. I hope They crush it on their next venture," an X user added.
"Not super surprised but sorry to see Molly go," a person wrote.
Other fans also pointed out Punkie Johnson's exit from SNL, and with Kearney also leaving, they think it's a "big loss" for the show as it heads to its 50th season.
"First Punkie and now Molly K. Two big losses for @nbcsnl heading into Season 50," a fan on X pointed out.
"Kinda worried that the two cast member departures announced are the nonbinary cast member and the black LGBTQ+ cast member," another X user wrote.
News of Molly Kearney leaving SNL came just a day after former SNL castmate Punkie Johnson shared an Instagram video revealing that she won't be back for SNL Season 50.
Molly Kearney says it was a "true honor" to work on SNL amid news of their departure from the show
Along with their news of exiting the show, Molly Kearney reflected on the two seasons they spent on set with their costars. They shared a series of throwback pictures from on-set on Instagram, with a message looking back on their SNL stint.
They wrote in the caption:
"Reflecting on the amazing 2 seasons I got on this show, it was such a dream come true. So incredibly grateful for this period in my life."
Kearney also made a shoutout to their "big-hearted buddies behind the scenes," who they mentioned have helped make magic happen every week on the show. They added:
"So many bald caps, so little time. It was a true honor to work with such a talented group of writers and DON'T EVEN HET ME STARTED ON THE CAST."
Molly Kearney gave a special mention to their "day 1 crew," including Marcello Hernandez, Devon Walker, and Michael Longfellow, who all shared their love and support for the comedian as they said goodbye to SNL in the comment section.
