What is Spider-Noir all about?
Spider-Noir is an upcoming live-action series featuring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, Peter Parker's genetic clone. Set in 1930s New York, the wall-crawling private investigator will be seen as a grittier and steely version of the Peter Parker character known to fans.
The show's official logline reads:
“(It) tells the story of an ageing and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
Spider-Noir is developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who also serve as its showrunners. The series will feature eight episodes, with the first two episodes being directed and executive produced by Harry Bradbeer. Furthermore, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Dan Shear, and Amy Pascal, among others, serve as the show's executive producers.
Filming for Spider-Noir began in Los Angeles in August 2024 and is scheduled to wrap up by February 2025.
In addition to Cage, the cast will feature Lamorne Morris as journalist Robbie Robertson, Brendan Gleeson as a New York mob boss, and Li Jun Li as a nightclub singer.
Other notable cast members include Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, and Karen Rodriguez.
The series has not announced an official release date as of this writing.
Nicolas Cage reprises his role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Nicolas Cage was confirmed to star as the show's titular character in May 2024. In an interview with The New Yorker in July 2024, he described his upcoming project as follows:
"It’s more of a Pop-art mashup, like a Lichtenstein painting, where I want to do something that has some sparkle to it. It’s fun to look at........One of the things that I like about this potential show is that it’s fantasy. It’s not really people beating people up. Monsters are involved.”
Cage had previously voiced the character of the vigilante in the 2018 animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, he did not reprise his role in the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He is set to return for Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final film in the animated trilogy.
Spider-Noir will premiere on the MGM+ and be available to stream on Prime Video.
