Ryan Murphy's latest addition to the Monster saga on Netflix, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, was recently released on Netflix on September 19, 2024. It revolves around the Menendez brothers who were prosecuted for murdering their parents. While they were accused of murdering their parents for selfish reasons, the brothers maintained that it stemmed from years of physical and s*xual abuse.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story received mixed reviews upon release. However, critics reviewed that the series was well acted out. But, viewers took a further issue with it when it was made clear to them that the series was apparently misrepresenting the brothers in question and further damaging their reputation.
Even Erik Menendez, one of the two brothers on whom the story is based, has also claimed that the alleged truth has been depicted wrongfully in Ryan Murphy's show.
Similarly, many viewers had a problem with how Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story portrayed an incestuous and allegedly inaccurate depiction of the brothers. In a clip that has been circulating online, the brothers can be seen sharing a kiss which has drawn major backlash from many online.
"Ryan Murphy you are a sick sick man," said one viewer.
"The mendes brothers deserved a proper amplification of the story of how they got abused by their father and not whatever this is," said another viewer.
"The Menendez brothers were victims of s*xual abuse who finally retaliated against their abusers and this disgusting piece of trash has turned their story into an incestuous fanfic. Hell is not hot enough for Ryan Murphy," mentioned another viewer.
"Creating fanfiction involving incest between real-life brothers especially when they have been victims of abuse and incest themselves is absolutely vile and insane Im literally speechless," said another viewer.
"If you want actual information on the menendez brothers story that isn’t a incestuous fantasy from ryan murphy, i highly recommend the book “the menendez murders” by robert rand," recommended another viewer.
Viewers were also not happy with how Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story portrays the brothers as spoiled kids who had more than what they needed and were still unappreciative.
"It’s just sickening," commented one viewer.
"I hate how the Netflix series painted them as spoiled rich kids who wanted more than what they had and were unappreciative," said another viewer.
"Lyle was portrayed as such an a*****e in monsters. In real life He was described as polite and not an angry person at all, i dont know how that got lost in translation to ryan murphy. Honestly Monsters was very innacurate and i hate how they portrayed both of them," chimed another viewer.
Erik Menendez speaks out against Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez story
Following the release of Monsters: The Lye and Erik Menendez Story, Erik Menendez spoke out against the Ryan Murphy created show, stating how it has undone years of progress in shedding light on childhood trauma. In a statement that was shared by his wife Tammi Menendez on X, he said:
"I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show. I can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say, I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent.”
Currently, Netflix and Ryan Murphy haven't responded to the severe fan backlash and Erik Menendez's comments, in regards to Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
