Actress-singer Selena Gomez recently disclosed that she cannot carry her own children. In an interview with Vanity Fair on Monday, September 9, the 32-year-old said that her medical issues prohibited her from getting pregnant safely. Gomez then revealed,
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."
The actor and singer further told the magazine that her ongoing health problems, including her Lupus diagnosis, pose a challenge to her carrying a pregnancy to term and giving birth. Lupus is a disease of inflammation brought on by the immune system attacking its own tissues.
Selena Gomez was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and Lupus
Selena Gomez recently opened up about her health issues to Vanity Fair. The Disney star disclosed in 2015 that she received a Lupus diagnosis in 2013. Lupus is an incurable immune system disease. When a person has lupus, the immune system produces an excessive amount of antibodies.
The excessive amount of antibodies attack organs and tissues, causing damage that is often irreversible, which is why many Lupus patients require organ transplants. Although Lupus patients can have healthy pregnancies, there is a higher chance of complications such as high blood pressure, blood clots, and kidney difficulties.
Common effects include stiff and painful joints, fever, fatigue, rashes and sensitive skin, chest pain, hair loss, and mouth ulcers. Early symptoms of the disease can include unexplained weight gain, high blood pressure, or swelling in the legs, ankles, or around the eyes.
As a side effect of the issue, three years after her Lupus diagnosis, the singer's kidneys failed, but in 2017, her friend and fellow actor Francia Raisa offered to donate one of her own. Speaking about the same, Selena Gomez said in a November 21, 2017, ABC interview,
"My doctors told me I had lupus nephritis, one of the most common complications of lupus. They said that I would be needing a kidney transplant. I wasn't necessarily good at knowing what that meant so it actually got to a point where it was life or death.”
She further said,
“Thankfully, one of my best friends gave me her kidney and it was the ultimate gift of life. And I am doing quite well now. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a donor."
Furthermore, in 2018, following an episode of psychosis, the self-made billionaire was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She reportedly started hearing voices, which gradually became louder and louder, and that's when the episode began. As per the National Institute of Health, pregnancy among individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder may be deemed as high-risk in certain cases.
Selena Gomez’s health issues might pose a threat to her pregnancy in the future
Recently, the Only Murder in the Building star talked with Vanity Fair about her role in the upcoming Spanish crime film Emilia Perez, where she plays a young mother. During the same, she opened up about becoming a parent one day.
The Rare Beauty owner added that she had hoped to become a mother one day and was considering adopting a child or using a surrogate.
"It's not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I'm in a much better place with that.”
Selena Gomez continued,
"I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I'm one of those people."
This isn’t the only time Gomez talked about the difficulties she might face during her pregnancy. On November 3, 2022, Gomez revealed to Rolling Stone that the medicine she takes for her bipolar disorder may prevent her from having a safe pregnancy.
