Ghost of Tsushima is set to expand beyond gaming, with Sony announcing plans to adapt the popular video game into various entertainment mediums. On September 24, 2024, as stated by the New York Times, Sucker Punch Productions confirmed a sequel releasing in 2025, titled Ghost of Yotei, alongside the news of a movie adaptation and other spinoffs.

Ghost of Tsushima (2020) was set in feudal Japan. The game centers on Jin Sakai, a samurai combating the Mongol incursion of Tsushima Island during the 13th century. The game received extensive praise for its historical fidelity, engaging gameplay, and impressive graphics, achieving sales exceeding 13 million copies globally.

Sony’s vision for Ghost of Tsushima

Sony’s decision to adapt Ghost of Tsushima into multiple entertainment formats follows a growing trend in the gaming industry. Video game adaptations have become more common, and Sony's announcement comes on the heels of major successes like The Last of Us on HBO.

As Hermen Hulst, chief executive of Sony's studio business group, explained,

“We saw the same with ‘The Last of Us’ on HBO. From a business perspective it makes a lot of sense. When a television series or movie comes out, people are inspired to play again or make friends to play.”

Ghost of Yotei, the next game in the series, is also part of this bigger plan. Creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, who supervised the creation of the first game, want the franchise to expand into a wide range of entertainment options. When Ghost of Yotei comes out on PlayStation 5 next year, Sony will be able to build on the strong fan base that the first game created.

Expanding the franchise with Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima already has a dedicated following due to its deep connection to Japanese history and culture. More people, especially fans of historical dramas, are likely to be interested in the decision to branch out into movies and other media. Ghost of Yotei will be set in northern Japan and have battles in the snow, big landscapes, and a new main character named Atsu.

The original Ghost of Tsushima game had already set the stage for future adaptations. The game’s cinematic style, inspired by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, made it a prime candidate for movie development.

Fox and Connell had been planning the expansion since the game’s release. The development team at Sucker Punch Productions took multiple research trips to Japan to ensure the game’s historical accuracy and visual authenticity.

The first trailer for the game shows beautiful landscapes, such as Mount Yotei, a famous mountain in Japan's Hokkaido region. The team went to more than a dozen places in Japan to get ideas for the wildlife and natural scenery in the game. These immersive elements can be taken into a film adaptation, which will help Sony capture the look and feel of the original game.

Connell mentioned,

“I sat there for two hours just staring at the mountain. It was stunning.”

Fox also enjoyed recording nature sounds for his audio team at Shiretoko National Park on Hokkaido's northeastern tip. He mentioned,

“Inside the park, you have to watch a video telling you about the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park with jagged cliffs and water, yet all the time being aware there were dangerous bears, was electrifying.”

Other big franchises are also looking at feudal Japan as a setting at the same time that Sony does. The Assassin's Creed series by Ubisoft is set to come up with a new game soon. The TV show Shogun is about Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate. Ghost of Tsushima has a unique story, well-thought-out world-building, and emotional depth.

Atsu is a new character in the upcoming Ghost of Yotei. She has to deal with problems in a world that is dangerous and changing. It is said that the game will have new ways to play, like using guns and putting more emphasis on player choice.

With these additions, Sony hopes to give players an original but familiar experience that builds on the legacy of the original game. As Sony releases Ghost of Tsushima on multiple platforms, the game could become a flagship franchise. The success of recent video game adaptations and the loyal Ghost of Tsushima fanbase suggest Sony's plans will succeed.
