Supacell is the newest superhero-themed series on the block and Netflix has dropped a new trailer for this upcoming series. The Supacell trailer provided a glimpse at a brand new superhero universe where the characters seem to be just coming to terms with the powers they possess.

Andrew Onwubolu MBE, also known as Rapman, is the creator and showrunner of the upcoming series. He is known for creating very socially conscious films and series exploring themes of gang violence in Britain, betrayal, and the struggles of the working class.

The trailer sees five ordinary people from South London suddenly discovering that they have powers beyond normal. The trailer begins with Tosin Cole's character Michael Lasaki claiming that he went to the future and seeing an unforeseen event. This spurs Michael on a path to connecting with his superpowers in a bid to save the woman he loves. The trailer then goes on to show the other people who are discovering their superpowers.

Supacell is an upcoming Netflix series that will establish a new superhero universe set in London. The show's creator Rapman has focused the series on establishing black superheroes while providing a commentary on life in the London boroughs.

The official logline of the series as per Netflix reads:

"A group of ordinary people from South London unexpectedly develop super powers with no clear connection between them other than them all being Black. As they deal with the impact on their daily lives, one man has to bring them together to protect the one he loves — all while avoiding the powerful and nefarious agents that have noticed their special abilities."

The series features five ordinary Londoners - Michael (Tosin Cole), Sabrina (Nadine Mills), Andre (Eric Kofi-Abrefa), Rodney (Calvin Demba), and Tazer (Josh Tedeku) who eventually discover that they have superpowers. The trailer showed that Michael can travel through time and he discovers something which prompts him to bring in the four other superheroes together.

In an interview with GamesRadar, the creator Rapman had the following to say about the series:

"I know the superhero genre, 100% that’s been done to death, but Supacell is different – it’s a superpower drama about normal people, real people, not people that are martyrs, not people that are going to save the world, just people that try to save themselves and their families. Just what normal people would do.”

Rapman is known for creating stories that empower the black community in Britain and he aims to bring their stories to light. An interesting fact about Supacell is that Rapman worked on the theme song with New Wave and Netflix. This provided an opportunity to six black creators to break into the television industry. The creators are Jessica Magaye, Ricardo McCleary-Campbell, Saraphina Mattis, Melissa Simon-Hartman, Cleo Young, and Micheal Ademilua.

Netflix's upcoming superhero series Supacell will premiere on June 27, 2024.
