Netflix’s The Stranger is an intense and complicated mystery thriller show based on a novel of the same name by Harlan Coben. The miniseries was released back in January 2020 and ran for 8 episodes, leaving fans with a range of questions upon its conclusion.

The story begins with a mysterious 'Strangerapproaching Adam Price with information that leads to his wife going missing. This unknown person usually roams around wearing with a baseball cap.

In the final episode, the 'Stranger' is revealed to be Christine Killane, the half-sister of Adam. She is a professional blackmailer who uncovers people's secrets and in return, gets paid by her clients who hire her to do so.

Raised by Martin Killane, Christine finds out that he is actually not her biological father. She gets to know that Adam grew up in the same neighborhood as hers. Later, she discovers that he is her half-sibling as their dad is Ed Price. This changes the entire narrative’s nature.

The titular character, portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen, undergoes a series of unexplained encounters that keep her identity hidden right until the end. Embroiled in a murder mystery, audiences realize that the character is deeply connected to the events that take place.

Let's dive deep into the ending of the Netflix series.

The Stranger on Netflix: Ending Explained

Christine informs Adam about his wife Corrine's fake pregnancy

Driven by a troubled past, Christine aka The Stranger first understands the extent of Adam Price and his friend Doug Tripp’s alleged involvement in an underground drug empire. While viewers tend to believe throughout the series that her actions are driven by jealousy, things take a poignant turn when it is revealed that Christine is actually looking out for her family.

Christine tells Adam about his wife, Corrine’s fake pregnancy because she aims to protect him from more damage, and is too awkward to initially disclose her relationship with him. A flashback reveals how Christine, in truth, only recently realized that she had a half-brother, before proceeding to try and contact him.

While Corrine suspiciously disappears, it turns out that she becomes the victim of murder. Upon realizing the truth, Adam, who spends much of the series trying to find his own sister under the belief that she knows his wife’s whereabouts, instead decides to track down the actual killer.

Adam ends up killing Doug Tripp, Corrine's murderer

Adam's wife, Corrine, is introduced as a treasurer of a local football club. She becomes a prime suspect of embezzling funds from the club. However, it is revealed in the finale that Doug Tripp, Adam's neighbor and family friend, is the one who has been stealing the money.

Corrine digs out the truth and threatens Tripp that she'll report him to police. That's when he calls her to meet in-person and then finally kills her. In the final episode, Adam confronts Doug Tripp, who confesses to hitting Corrine with a hammer and burying her body in the woods.

How does the 'Stranger' know everything?

Football coach Bob Baime from the same sports club hires the 'Stranger' (Christine) to investigate the fund embezzlement case involving Corinne. That's how Christine researches about Corrine's fake pregnancy and Adam's past.

Why does Patrick Katz kill Heidi Doyle?

The series ending also explains the involvement of Patrick Katz, who is revealed to have murdered Heidi Doyle in his bid to find information about The Stranger. This sequence is related to one of Christine’s blackmail cases.

While Patrick Katz is a police officer, Heidi Doyle is a baker who happens to be a friend of head detective Johanna Griffin. Christine blackmails Heidi as she finds out that the latter gets money by hooking up with rich businessmen via 'Sugar Baby' website. Heidi agrees to pay a huge amount to Christine to keep her information hidden.

Meanwhile, Katz starts taking up more investigation gigs to earn extra money to pay for his daughter's medical bills. He is hired by 'Powers,' another user of that website who is being blackmailed. This leads Katz to Heidi as he wants to extract information about the 'Stranger' from her. As Heidi tries to run away, he shoots her. He tries to frame now-disappeared Corrine for this murder by leaving her old key fob at the crime scene.

Hence, the series, via its multiple late twists, ends up turning the narrative upside down. Instead of The Stranger being the person responsible for the murders that happen in the series, it turns out that Christine is merely looking out for a newfound family. She is actually trying to protect her own life from people she knows are hunting her throughout.
