In her recently-released Netflix special For Your Approval, Ellen DeGeneres opened up about going for therapy to deal with the hatred she was facing over workplace harrassment allegations. She said:

“I was in therapy for a while trying to deal with all the hatred that was coming at me. It was not a common situation for a therapist to deal with."

The talk show host continued:

"At one point, my therapist said, ‘Ellen where do you get this idea that everyone hates you?’ And I said, ‘Well, New York Times, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Us Weekly, I think Elmo may have said something recently on an episode of Sesame Street."

Ellen DeGeneres also joked about her talk show being canceled over such allegations, quipping that she “got kicked out of show business.” The comedian revealed that her therapist asked her to avoid looking at the news and media, but she would still get to know about news circulating about her through her friends who checked up on her.

“Here’s the problem: I am a comedian who got a talk show and I ended the show every day by saying, ‘Be kind to one another.’ Had I ended my show by saying ‘go f*** yourselves,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind," DeGeneres joked.

Ellen DeGeneres faced massive backlash on the internet after a July 2020 report by BuzzFeed published an investigation into allegations about the talk show host harboring a toxic workplace environment in her show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The investigation was based on various interviews of employees and executives who worked with DeGeneres on her show.

In her Netflix special, the comedian spoke at length about her experience of going out during those years. According to DeGeneres, wherever she went, be it in a restaurant or in the streets, people would stare at her, assuming she was "mean."

Ellen DeGeneres also claimed her actions with her employees were misinterpreted. The comedian described that she started playing a game of tag with her employees in 2016 and would often chase them around the hallways and the studio. Such actions were misinterpreted as her "terrorizing" her employees.

The comedian admitted that she was “a very immature boss" as she did not want to be a boss. She claimed she never wanted to be in-charge, before addressing some of the criticisms she received over the years for gender-specific rules. DeGeneres stood by some of the rules she created, explaining:

“If we don’t follow those rules, it makes people uncomfortable. And when people get uncomfortable, there are consequences.”

However, Ellen DeGeneres confirmed that she is happy and content now, leaving all of the backlash in the past. The comedian explained that she is "happy not being a boss, or a brand, or a billboard" but "just a person."
