During the latest episode of Saturday Night Live AKA SNL, comedian Bowen Yang appeared as the internet’s favorite hippo, Moo Deng. However, the social media users were taken aback when many pointed out how Bowen Yang had been imitating Chapell Roan in the skit. During the skit, Bowen Yang, dressed up as Moo Deng talked about the animal’s experience, as he stated:

“For the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose. The response has been overwhelming. But it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries.”

However, as soon as the videos from the SNL skit went online, many poured in mixed reactions, as several netizens noted that Bowen Yang was mocking Chapell Roan and her revelations about “creepy” and “weird” fans. As an X user, @PopCrave posted the video on the platform, a netizen commented and said:

Chappell Roan left the masses surprised when she uploaded a video in the end of August 2024, revealing how she had been harassed by fans. She called out their “predatory behaviour,” and said in the video:

“If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from the car window? Would you harass her in public? Would you go up to a random lady and say, ‘Can I get a photo with you?’ And she’s like, ‘No, what the f*ck?’ And then you get mad at this random lady?”

Adding, she said:

“Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and friends. Please stop assuming things about me.”

On the other hand, for the unversed, Moo Deng is a pygmy hippopotamus who is currently in the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. The hippo became instantly popular amongst the masses in September 2024, as soon as her images from inside the zoo went viral.

Since then, many companies have started selling merchandise inspired by the hippo, and many influencers have also posted makeup tutorials based on a look inspired by the animal. Furthermore, BBC also reported that due to Moo Deng, the foot fall of the zoo has increased drastically, as more and more people are coming to see the animal.

As Chappell’s rant about her followers and fans harassing her continues to be in the limelight, Saturday Night Live's alleged imitation of the singer has brought in a lot of backlash. However, at the moment, SNL has not confirmed if the cast was really imitating the singer. Meanwhile, Roan has also not reacted to the video, yet.
