The Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked Fox News' coverage of the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Stewart hosted a special live edition of his show immediately after the DNC, which included a section calling out the network's negative description of the convention, sarcastically stating:
"Perhaps the best way to see how well it actually went is through the eyes of a more objective observer, a fair and balanced organization that will give you a more clear-eyed perspective."
Stewart played a montage of reactions by the network pundits on the first day of the DNC, including Jesse Watter's saying, "There’s not much joy in this convention hall," "the vibes are off," and "this is probably the most boring scene I’ve ever seen in my entire life."
"Oooh, so boring... I forgot you're a daredevil. I forgot your life is a never-ending joyride of talking to Brit Hume in between catheter ads on Fox," Stewart mocked.
Jon Stewart puts Fox on blast for its coverage of DNC
Jon Stewart remarked that, despite their earlier criticism, network anchors had to acknowledge that the DNC 2024 was lively and jovial. He continued:
"But unfortunately for Jesse Knievel over here, the next night even Fox had to acknowledge, ‘fire emoji, fire emoji, fire emoji."
The footage then cuts to a Fox commentator saying, "People are having a great time down here. Stevie Wonder just performed. And there is more electricity in this room..."
However, Stewart noted that the pundits had a problem with that as well, playing more clips of anchors saying, "All the joy, all the vibes, all the emotion, it’s nothing but empty calories. They burn fast and make you fat," and "You’re not going to eat good vibes, right?"
"Which is it? Did the vibes fatten you up, or are they emotional Ozempic? I guess you’re right. You can’t feed your family on vibes. You can only feed your family on immigration and fearmongering," Stewart sarcastically quipped.
Stewart continued recapping Jesse Watters' reactions, stating, "(he) bravely continued the pretense that the convention was going badly," despite the footage being played on Watters' screen showing the exact opposite. This included him stating it felt like a funeral, while the clip showed footage of the DJ dancing and vibing.
"Last night felt like a funeral. And we all know funerals always have a DJ," Jon Stewart remarked.
Jon Stewart was also critical of the DNC, particularly calling out the decision to not feature a Palestinian American speaker. He also noted the "contradictions" throughout the four nights. Referencing the various speakers, he remarked:
"They had union leaders and CEOs, Democratic party icons and lifelong Republicans. They had a guy saying, ‘Screw the billionaires’ followed by a very happy billionaire."
In an earlier segment, Jon Stewart joked that if he were Donald Trump, he would just be "tweeting nonsensical sh*t to distract from the fact that (Harris) doesn’t faintly resemble the caricature that’s been painted." He was referring to the former president's actual Truth Social posts, which included comments like "IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?" and "WHERE'S HUNTER?"
