Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless criticized actor Kevin Sorbo for his racist remarks about VP Kamala Harris. On Friday, August 9, 2024, the actress took to her X to call out Sorbo in a series of posts (now deleted). She began by writing:
“In his defense, I personally witnessed a time when Kevin Sorbo stuck up for a black man against white people.”
She brought up an incident from February 1995 on the sets of her husband Robert Tapert's show, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Lucy, who played Xena on the show, along with her cast mates were discussing late NFL star O.J. Simpson's trial for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman.
The My Life Is Murder star continued her rant on X, explaining that when she brought up the murders, Sorbo criticized Nicole. She stated:
“And Peanut (Sorbo) growled: ‘Hey! I knew Nicole and let me tell you... she was no picnic!’ Boom.”
Lawless added:
“We were all gobsmacked. I said, “She didn’t deserve to be stabbed to death.” He replied, “I’m just saying, She was a piece of work.” It stuck in my mind because those Americanisms were unusual to us. But we knew what he meant. #DontGetMeStarted!”
Lawess was reacting to Kevin Sorbo's X post from Thursday, where he questioned Kamala Harris' race, writing:
“If Kamala really is black, have her say the N-word, let the people decide for themselves.”
Lucy Lawless previously criticized Kevin Sorbo for his comments about the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack
Kevin Sorbo, who is a vocal Trump supporter, took to X on Thursday to call out the Democrats for nominating Kamala Harris, stating,
"2 years ago most people didn’t even know who Kamala was, now she’s the democratic nominee?"
He also questioned her pick for running mate, Tim Walz. Referring to the controversy surrounding his military record (many claim he dropped out of the Army), he tweeted:
"It’s impolite to ask a woman about her weight, a man about his salary, or Tim Walz about his service record."
Sorbo's tweet comes a day after former president Donald Trump alleged Harris, who was born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, misled voters about her race. He falsely claimed that his presidential rival "happened to turn Black," stating:
"She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn black, and now she wants to be known as black."
The incident took place last month when Donald Trump appeared before the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago.
This is not the first time the former co-stars have locked horns. Back in 2021, Lucy Lawless and Kevin Sorbo were involved in another X feud stemming from the latter's comments about the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. At the time, Sorbo claimed that it was "leftist agitators" who broke into the Capitol and not supporters of Donald Trump.
This prompted Lawless to call him out, saying the men were not patriots but people who were made to do the "evil biddings" of others.
Kevin Sorbo has not publicly reacted to Lucy Lawless's comments.
