As Keke Palmer’s mother, Sharon, appeared on her daughter’s podcast, Baby, This is Keke Palmer, she revealed shocking details about former Nickelodeon executive Dan Schneider’s sets, and called them “very weird,” and “cultish.”

Keke Palmer, who is now 30 years old, starred in Nickelodeon’s show True Jackson, VP. Being a teen sitcom, the show was created by Andy Gordon, and it ran for three years, from November 2008 to August 2011. Apart from Keke, the show also starred Ashley Argota, Matt Shively, Danielle Bisutti, Greg Proops, and Ron Butler.

As Keke Palmer asked her mom in the August 6, 2024 episode about “feeling a way about Nickelodeon,” Sharon went on to explain that the atmosphere was very “off-putting.”

She said:

“My honest opinion is I thought the whole atmosphere of the Dan Schneider set was very weird, very cultish. The parents were very secretive, and I honestly thought they all took themselves way too seriously.”

Sharon continued:

“The whole conversation was: ‘Oh my God! What’s happening next? Did you hear they’re going to cancel this show? What’s coming next?’ It was always so frantic about what was being cancelled.”

Dan Schnieder has been a producer at Nickelodeon and has been accused of gender discrimination. As per USA Today's report published on March 22, 2024, the producer has also been accused of engaging in unprofessional behavior in the workplace.

Many of the female employees have reported that Dan often asked them to rub his neck while shooting.

Keke Palmer’s Nickelodeon journey revisited as her mother appears on her podcast

As Keke Palmer’s mother Sharon appeared on her podcast, she revealed how she looked at Palmer’s work in Nickelodeon “as a stopping station.” Sharon recalled:

“I always looked at you being at Nickelodeon as being a stopping station. You didn’t get your start on Nickelodeon or Disney. You were blessed and fortunate enough to work in adult situations and kid situations. My mentality about the entertainment business wasn’t that Disney Channel or Nickelodeon was the end all to be all, but a lot of the parents did.”

Keke Palmer, who made her debut as a child actor in Barbershop 2: Back in Business in the year 2004, rose to success after she appeared in the lead role of True Jackson in 2008. At the time, Palmer was 15 years old and gained a lot of appreciation for her portrayal of the titular character.

Thereafter, she also lent her voice for Aisha in Nickelodeon’s revival of Winx Club. Appearing in True Jackson opened doors for Keke, as she later appeared in many TV shows like The Cleveland Show, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Abducted: The Carlina White Story, Rags, 90210 and even Berlin Station.

Following her appearance in the Nickelodeon show, she was also seen in many movies like Shrink, Joyful Noise, Animal, Imperial Dreams, Brotherly Love, Hustlers, Alice and This Is Me…Now: A Love Story. She will next be seen in Good Fortune and The Pickup, as both movies are scheduled to be released in 2025.
