Actress Danielle Fishel, known for her appearance as Topanga Lawrence in the successful 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World, disclosed a health concern on her podcast dubbed Pod Meets World on Monday. The 43-year-old actress revealed that she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a type of breast cancer.

Danielle Fishel’s diagnosis has raised attention to her much-admired work and also to her family and ethnicity. Danielle Christine Fishel was born on May 5, 1981, in Mesa, Arizona, to parents Jennifer and Rick Fishel. Her mother, Jennifer, acted as Danielle's personal manager during her initial years in the entertainment industry, which helped make her entry into acting easy.

Her father, Rick Fishel, was a medical equipment sales executive and later in life, became the president of Masimo Corporation, a company that deals in the designing of non-invasive medical monitoring technologies.

Danielle Fishel's family background and ethnicity

The Fishel family is of diverse origins that can be traced to their ancestors. Not much is known about Danielle’s family background, but it can be noted that she is of partial Maltese origin, which she has disclosed in interviews several times. During the first three weeks of her life, the Fishel family settled in Yorba Linda, California, which was her childhood home.

She also has a younger brother named Christopher, who has kept his profile low-key, and not much is known about him. Since childhood, Fishel had an interest in becoming an actor. She began her acting career at the age of ten during the performances of The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan in the local theatre.

This early introduction to acting garnered voice-over work and commercials and transitioned to guest appearances on popular sitcoms such as Full House as well as in films like Harry and the Hendersons. Her mother, Jennifer became her full-time manager and thus added constant support to Danielle’s career.

The support offered by Jennifer and the stability of Rick’s career were instrumental in giving Danielle Fishel all the time and attention she required to make it in the field of acting. However, owing to the demands of the industry, Danielle continued to work and also graduated from Calabasas High School in 1999.

Danielle Fishel’s big gig was in 1993 when she earned the role of Topanga Lawrence in Boy Meets World. Originally, the writers only planned to include Topanga as a small character in the show. However, Danielle was soon promoted to a full cast member because of the popularity that her character garnered among the viewers.

Topanga, who was portrayed as intelligent beyond her age, was one of the most beloved characters on television in the 90s. Danielle Fishel has remained active in show business in the years that followed. She switched to directing and featured in several TV series too.

The recent announcement of her cancer diagnosis has made fans aware of the importance of early detection and regular check-ups. During her podcast, Fishel urged people not to put off medical tests and explained how her cancer was detected on time after a mammogram.

Danielle Fishel also wanted to let her fans know that her illness was at ‘stage zero,’ essentially meaning that it was discovered early and she is positive about the treatment process that follows the diagnosis. Danielle Fishel has the backing of family, friends, and fans as she begins her journey to rehabilitation.
