It looks like DC Studios' Green Lantern series is set to go all in as a potential name for who will be playing Hal Jordan in the upcoming has been revealed. Coming from writers and creators Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, the series will focus on an older Hal Jordan taking a younger John Stewart under his wing, and the part of the former has been offered to none other than Josh Brolin.
Reported first by Nexus News, it was revealed that Josh Brolin has been offered a part in the Green Lantern series, titled Lanterns, and that part just happens to be Hal Jordan. While Brolin hasn't yet accepted the role yet, it looks like DC Studios has reached out to him. Alongside that, casting for John Stewart is underway as well.
While it's unclear when the Green Lantern series will premiere, it has been picked up by HBO and will be premiering on Max.
Josh Brolin has previously starred in superhero franchises
Josh Brolin has a career that spans a huge filmography and includes acclaimed projects like No Country for Old Men, Sicario, Dune, and more. However, he isn't a stranger to the superhero genre either. If Brolin accepts the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming series, then this would be the second time he has portrayed a DC character after previously having played Jonah Hex.
Alongside that, Brolin also previously starred as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Appearing in films Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, Brolin received acclaim for his performance. Following that, the actor also starred as the time-traveling mutant Cable in Deadpool 2.
What will the Green Lantern series be about?
The upcoming series Lanterns was said to be inspired by True Detective when it was originally revealed online by James Gunn in January 2023. The series is said to be focusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a mystery deep within precinct Earth, which leads into the "biggest" story of the DCU. Talking about the project, James Gunn said:
"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan. We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."
Currently, writers Damon Lindelof (best known for Lost, Watchmen, and The Leftovers), Chris Mundy (best known for Ozark), and Tom King (Batman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Wonder Woman) are currently on the writing team for the show. The series was also recently officially picked up by HBO.
DCU's first Green Lanter, Guy Gardner, is also set to appear in the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn and will star Nathan Fillion as the character. Prior to the formation of DC Studios, another Green Lantern series was in development by Greg Berlanti, with Finn Witrock playing Guy Gardner in the show.
