Whoopi Goldberg paused political commentaries while covering the 2024 presidential election on The View to pay tribute to her late friend and collaborator, Quincy Jones. The film and TV producer and composer passed away on Sunday at the age of 91, and the Oscar winner took a moment on The View's Monday episode to honor him.

As the election discussion transitioned to talking about Jones during the show, Goldberg said:

"I can't even explain what's happening in my head right now because I know I have to be here and I have to be focused. But we just lost the extraordinary Quincy Jones, songwriter, composer, producer, he worked with everybody."

Whoopi Goldberg pointed out some of her late friend and mentor's career highlights, including working with Michael Jackson. She also shared that they worked together in The Color Purple, saying:

"He was the composer on The Color Purple, which is how I met Quincy."

Besides composing the score for the Steven Spielberg film, Jones also co-produced the entire project. He also reportedly played a key role in casting Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey for the movie and was behind its Oscar-nominated original soundtrack titled Miss Celie's Blues.

The show's host also recalled his friend and dished about his loyalty towards her despite other people trying to distance themselves from her. Goldberg further mentioned:

"What I can tell you is, in three words, is that I had no better friend, he never left, when other people were flocking away, Q stayed, and he always told me to stand my ground."

Goldberg then added that she would follow the late composer's advice about standing her ground, which she said that she does and will always do.

Whoopi Goldberg shares honorary Oscar news for late composer Quincy Jones

Besides remembering the late Quincy Jones as a friend, Whoopi Goldberg also recalled his contribution to the music scene during her on-air tribute on The View. She said about Jones:

"The last thing I'm going to tell you is he's such a prolific composer, he composed stuff you probably didn't even know was his, like Soul Bossa Nova, which was famously used by Austin Powers."

Goldberg also announced that Quincy Jones will receive an honorary Oscar this year. He's been in the business for about seven decades and has an expansive film credit, including In the Heat of the Night. Jones also had seven Oscar nods for his work in movies like The Color Purple, The Wiz, and In Cold Blood.

A press release from the Academy shared in June 2024 named Quincy as one of the recipients of its Oscar statuettes to be presented on November 17. Per the press release, the late composer is regarded as a "genius." It reads:

"Quincy Jones' artistic genius and relentless creativity have made him one of the most influential musical figures of all time."

Casting director Juliet Taylor, whose credits include Sleepless in Seatle, Annie Hall, and Schindler's List, will also receive an honorary Oscar.

As for Whoopi Goldberg's tribute to the 28 Grammy-winning composer, she previously shared an Instagram Story early on Monday to remember Jones' life. She said that he was "one of a kind" and that she was lucky to have him as a friend in her life.
