The Umbrella Academy fans can undoubtedly rejoice as Season 4 of the hit Netflix series has finally been announced. However, there is also trouble in paradise in the sense that the upcoming iteration of the show is set to be its final season, which means that the show will reach its conclusion at the end of the 6 episodes promised for the upcoming iteration.
However, there is little to complain about as far as the overall narrative is concerned. While Netflix has cancelled a range of its hit offerings in the past without satisfying conclusions, the same is not true with respect to The Umbrella Academy. Just like Stranger Things, which will end with a season 5, the creators had always planned for only four iterations of The Umbrella Academy.
Steve Blackman had earlier stated that the show will only have four seasons, and went in detail over the same during a Netflix interview. This means that the series will undergo a satisfying, planned conclusion, which was written in by chief writer Gerard Way.
The Umbrella Academy set to conclude with upcoming 4th season
Created by Steve Blackman for Netflix, The Umbrella Academy made its debut back in 2019 and revolves around a multi-billionaire and scientist Reginald Hargreeves, who forms a team of superheroes after finding out that a series of births had led to women giving birth to a set of mysterious children, all born with powers.
Hargreeves himself is shown as a high-functioning sociopath who knows that the world is set to face a range of threats. This leads to the creation of The Umbrella Academy, which includes superheroes who Hargreeves ‘numbers’, rather than naming. The storyline of the series itself is a direct iteration of the Hotel Oblivion and The Sparoow Academy comics arcs, which delve into the creation of an alternate timeline where Earth gets destroyed, and The Umbrella Academy must work together in order to bring normalcy to their surroundings.
Regardless, unlike a range of Netflix series that have undergone premature conclusions due to the streaming giants canceling them, it seems The Umbrella Academy is also set to be concluded just like the creator envisioned. This is in the sense that the show’s creators had always envisioned 4 seasons to complete their iteration of the narrative, with the final season set to release on August 8, 2024.
Regardless, with season 4 ending with the siblings losing their powers due to Hargreeves reprogramming the timeline, creator Steve Blackman himself explained what fans can expect in season 4:
“So, the siblings losing their powers isn’t going to be the only oddity in this timeline. There are new enemies who want to see them wiped out of existence, but how do they manage without their powers? Is there even a way to get them back? The stakes have never been greater.”
In the interview, the creator went on to reveal that each and every scene and event in the series has meaning. and a range of elements will only be explained in the final season. Hence, not only were 4 iterations completely planned, it is also set to bring light to a range of concepts that fans have questions about, thus far.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 will premiere on August 8, 2024, on Netflix.
