In the season one finale of On Call, Diaz is faced with a difficult dilemma as Harmon reinstates his probation. After repeated irresponsible activities that placed him in danger, including a near-fatal accident, Harmon determines Diaz needs more time to learn how to be more cautious in dangerous situations.

Diaz is first outraged, believing that Harmon is holding him back, especially since they had become closer over the season. But as Harmon lays forth his logic, Diaz starts to get it. She is concerned for his safety but does not doubt his ability.

Harmon thinks that, like Delgado, Diaz might die if he keeps acting recklessly. She makes the difficult choice to keep him on probation because she wants him to live and become a better cop. Harmon made this decision out of concern and compassion for his welfare.

Though first frustrated, Diaz gradually realizes that Harmon's choice is not intended to punish him, but rather to help him grow as a cop. He recognizes she is attempting to protect him from the hazards of the work, which makes him appreciate her decision even more. Harmon is giving him the opportunity to learn from his mistakes and become a better officer in the long run.

Diaz gives Harmon the "Get Out of Jail Free" card she handed him earlier at the end of the show. By making this symbolic gesture, Diaz demonstrates his acceptance of her choice and his willingness to put in more effort, grow from his mistakes, and move forward. Their relationship is still solid, with Harmon assisting Diaz in getting well and making sure he's ready for the difficulties that lie ahead.
