One Tree Hill was among the most popular television shows in the 2000s. It ran for nine seasons, from 2003 to 2012. The cast members, like Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy, added to the popularity of the drama series.
In an exciting turn of events, Variety provided an exclusive report that stated One Tree Hill will make a comeback after more than a decade since it ended. The report states that stars from the original series, Sophia Bush, Danneel Ackles, and Hilarie Burton, are executive producing a sequel of One Tree Hill in association with the streaming platform Netflix.
The sequel is under development with Netflix, with Becky Hartman Edwards joining the team as the primary writer. Emily Moss Wilson is also joining as an executive producer of the series along with Danneel Ackle's husband, Jensen Ackles.
Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles will reprise their roles from the original One Tree Hill
Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles will be the executive producers of the upcoming sequel of One Tree Hill and will reprise their roles from the original series. Hilarie Burton played the role of the popular female lead, Peyton Sawyer, while Sophia Bush played the role of another leading character, Brooke Davis. Danneel Ackles (formerly Danneel Harris) joined as a recurring character named Rachel Gatina from the third season.
The rivalry between half-brothers Lucas (Murray) and Nathan (Lafferty) was the original subject of the television series, which took place in the made-up town of Tree Hill, North Carolina. With the progression of their lives and shared passion for basketball, the series evolved into a narrative centered around friendships, romantic relationships, and familial turmoil.
One Tree Hill was created by Mark Schwahn and ran for nine seasons on the WB network and the CW, the network that replaced it. However, in 2017, Schwahn faced public accusations of harassment and violence from Burton and several other members of the cast and crew. The crew also discussed the harassment at length on their podcast. Thus, Mark Schwahn will no longer be associated with the sequel of One Tree Hill.
Reports suggest the sequel is set 20 years later and centers on best friends Brooke and Peyton, now parents to teenagers and dealing with issues similar to those they had in the first series—such as love, grief, and insecurity.
Actress Sophia Bush shared a post on Instagram, hinting at the return of the series. She wrote:
"What if you really can go back home? If there's an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents? Own our history? Reclaim our turf? Honor our fans? Sign us up."
The post further reads:
"There's only one Tree Hill, after all. And you — the #OTHfam — have shown us that it's not just an idea. It really is the place where "everything's better and everything's safe."
The news about the revival of the series comes after the revival of another hit television series from the 2000s, Gilmore Girls (the series that put Chad Michael Murray in the spotlight). Although reps for WBTV and Netflix declined to comment on the development of the sequel series, Deadline reports that the deal-making process has likely gone through.
