After what can only be called a brilliant season, Only Murders in the Building season 4 concluded on October 29, 2024, bringing to close a burning mystery that saw many twists and turns throughout the previous nine episodes. The ninth episode had already seemingly confirmed the criminal; the finale explained whether the hypothesis that the podcasters made was true.
Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 10 kicked off after Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) figured out that Marshall (Jin Ha), the writer in their upcoming movie adaptation, was the disgraced stuntman who was after Sazz (Jane Lynch). Mabel simultaneously made this discovery while she was with Marshall, leading to a complicated start to the season.
However, before the episode concluded, this episode explained the history between Sazz and Marshall (whose real name is seemingly Rex Bailey) and revealed that Rex's failure to write a script that would be Hollywood material and Sazz's success to do the same without much fuss was the reason he killed her. The real motive was explored in detail in this episode, and it explained how Rex/Marshall managed to pull off the feat.

Following this, the episode also concluded with the wedding of Oliver and Lorretta (Meryl Streep) and kicked off a new mystery as well, which will bleed over to the next season, as has been the case with the previous seasons of the show.

Why did Marshall murder Sazz in Only Murders in the Building season 4?
Marshall was revealed to be the killer in the penultimate episode of Only Murders in the Building season 4, where Mabel (Selena Gomez) also found the original script of the movie adaptation, which has been at the center of the story this season, with Sazz's name as the author.
Mabel figured out that Marshall may have killed Sazz to steal her script. Marshall, understanding that she had uncovered his secret, held her at gunpoint. Charles and Oliver, in what was one of the most comical scenes of the finale, traveled through the ledge to help Mabel.
After initially entering and disarming Marshall, the trio got to hear his side of the story. Marshall revealed that he was the son of a hunter and his father wanted him to hunt all his life. But he wanted to be a writer, which caused friction between them. He wrote a script about this trauma, but no Hollywood house accepted it.
This led to him coming under Sazz's wing and becoming a stuntman. Sazz taught him well but his first gig ended in a disaster, which was depicted in the penultimate episode.
Later, Sazz, who wrote the script of the movie based on Charles, Mabel, and Oliver, showed him her script. The quality left him amazed and jealous at the same time and he decided to sabotage her work. Under the name of Marshall, Rex sent the script out after telling Sazz it wasn't good enough. The script was accepted by Bev Melon, who wanted to make the movie right away.
When Sazz found out about this, she told Rex that she would be telling this to Charles. To prevent this, Rex killed her, assumed the identity of Marshall, and started his work as the writer.
How did Charles, Mabel, and Oliver escape from Marshall?
Marshall soon disarmed the trio and was ready to kill them when Jan (Amy Ryan) shot him from Charles' apartment. After effectively saving the trio and getting her revenge for Sazz's death, Jan surrendered to the police.
She also revealed that she never left Charles' apartment after coming there three weeks ago. This was one of the most hilarious revelations of this episode. But Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 10 effectively connected the characters well, leading to a great finale.
Does Oliver leave after his marriage?
One of the prime elements of Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 10 was the heartfelt wedding of Oliver and Loretta. Loretta's job was taking her to New Zealand, and Oliver initially planned to move with her.
But after they discussed their relationship, Oliver and Loretta decided that their dynamic was hardly an ordinary one and that he should stay with his podcasting partners for now.
So, Oliver does not leave the trio, after all.
Is there another murder in the building?
As this was the finale of Only Murders in the Building season 4 and the series has already been renewed for another season, there was bound to be something leading to the next one. The final moments of Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 10 depicted two such moments.
First, Sofia Caccimelio (Tea Leoni) approached Charles and Mabel, asking them to find her missing husband, Nicky Caccimelio. Charles and Mabel turned her down, saying they only investigate murders in the building, but it seemed to establish that this small moment will have big implications in the next season.
In the final sequence, the trio discovered Lester (Teddy Coluca) murdered and dumped in the building's fountain, kickstarting another mystery that will keep fans hooked in the next season.
