The fourth season of Only Murders in the Building returned with its second episode on September 3, 2024, continuing the narrative from the packed premiere. With a murder finally in place, the three protagonists, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez), begin the investigation in this episode. There were also some exceptionally twisted clues throughout the episode, which would all add up to mean something bigger in the season.
Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 2 comprised many intriguing set pieces and even an expansion of the world of Arconia. We also got a glimpse of a few new and intriguing characters. However, by the end of the episode, the trio managed to find the spot where Saz (Jane Lynch) was killed and even a message left by her (written in blood).
The message spelled out "Tap in," a phrase she used before switching with Charles, indicating that even in death, she took Charles' place and saved him from the fall one last time. Moreover, a message also hinted that the West Tower residents, who were introduced in this episode, were perhaps more involved than one would have assumed.

Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 2: What did Sazz's last message mean?
Sazz was seemingly looking for something when she was shot. She was also dressed like Charles at the time. While some fans may have figured it out already, our protagonists, especially Charles himself, were far from believing that the bullet was actually for him and that the killer had no motive for killing Sazz.
While the trio had already hypothesized in the previous episode about the sniper, they managed to even locate the probable window from where the sniper had taken the shot. This led them to the West Tower, where Oliver and Mabel met a set of eccentric residents from the building opposite Charles'.
They also encountered the mystery name "Dudenoff," which seemed to ignite the attention of the people they met in the West Tower. This was during a card game that they called "Oh Hell," which also ended up being significant at the end of the episode.
The rest of Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 2 dealt with Mabel and Oliver investigating, and Charles mourning the loss of his oldest and closest friend (and sometimes in an unhealthy manner).
By the end of the episode, Oliver and Mabel manage to detect the wiped-off blood and even spot a message that Sazz possibly wrote before dying. When asked if this was familiar, Charles said he did recognize the phrase "Tap in," which Sazz used before they switched. This confirmed, at least to Charles, that the murderer did try to get him, only to kill Sazz by mistake.
Sazz may have also been looking for this threat against Charles as a means of protecting him. This could also be the reason she came snooping into the house before getting shot.
As a final twist, Oliver also deciphered a note that they initially assumed to be a number. He turned it upside down to realize it spelled "Oh Hell," the name of the card game in the West Tower. This solidified the link with the West Tower, hinting further that someone from that building was behind this murder.
Was Jan really at Charles' place?
One of the elements that this episode left intentionally vague was the presence of Jan (Amy Ryan), the OG murderer in Only Murders in the Building. Jan broke into Charles' apartment, who was already accompanied by a spirit Sazz. She allegedly did not come to kill him and only escaped to find out about Sazz.
The two mourned together after Charles broke the news to her, but she disappeared rather abruptly when Oliver and Mabel turned up, leading them to not believe Charles.
The police, led by recent Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph's Donna Williams, later came up to confirm that Jan had indeed escaped.
Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 2 ended after setting up multiple important elements, including the fact that the West Tower was directly involved in this murder, and possibly the next.
The first two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4 are now streaming on Hulu.
