Only Murders in the Building Season 4, which has had a brilliant run up to this point, delivered yet another brilliant development in the form of Lifeboat, an episode that finally untangled some of the mysteries for good while also preparing for the penultimate episode next week. This episode did a lot, and by its end, delivered one crucial clue about Sazz's (played by Jane Lynch) death.

This episode followed up on the freshly-retrieved suspicion on the West Wing residents after the events of the seventh episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 4. However, after each of the residents revealed how they met the mysterious Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne), it was confirmed that Sazz and Dudenoff weren't killed by the same person, after all.

In fact, the death of Dudenoff was completely unconnected from that of Sazz, and it was a mystery that was solved in this episode itself. However, in the case of Sazz, the mystery is far from over, and this episode ended up implicating a new suspect- Sazz's protege Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd), who was hospitalized after the attack on Oliver (Martin Short).

*Warning- There are major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 8 ahead.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 8 ending: Who is Sazz's protege?

Near the end of the episode, Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 8 introduced Helga, who was simply not told about Dudenoff's death, as per the late professor's request. However, the former resident of the West Wing had spoken to Sazz about the clues the latter had accumulated about the mystery killer who was allegedly behind the trio since the first season.

While discussing things with Sazz over the ham radio, Helga learned that she had a protege, who had seemingly gone awry. She claimed that he was harassing her constantly and had even remarked that this protege would be the death of her. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that this stuntman that Sazz spoke about was none other than Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd), Ben Glenroy's stunt double.

Stubbins was hospitalized after the bullet hit him while someone tried to assassinate Oliver, but the end of the episode hinted that he was recovering.

What happened to Dudenoff?

One of the biggest mysteries this episode solved was about the death of Dudenoff. While we and our podcasters were led to believe that the same killer was behind the murders of Dudenoff and Sazz, it was revealed by the end of the episode that Dudenoff had killed himself.

Dudenoff did this because he was diagnosed with a terminal illness and wanted the West Tower residents to continue living in the apartments he owned and collect his social security checks every month.

To help them live out their dream lives, he decided to cut his life short before the illness killed him anyway and asked them to burn his body in the incinerator, where his remains were found while the trio recovered Sazz's ashes. Dudenoff excluded Helga from this elaborate scheme because she was already reeling from her father's death and had considered him a father-like figure.

So Dudenoff's death wasn't a murder but a suicide. This wrapped up the entire mystery of the West Wing and Dudenoff and also confirmed that the case wasn't interconnected with that of Sazz's murder.

Is the real killer still out there?

Yes, the killer that Only Murders in the Building Season 4 has been focusing on from the start is still out there. As hinted in this episode, this may be someone who has been around for a long time and wants this podcast to stop.

With only two episodes remaining, we may not be far away from the truth of the matter. The upcoming episode will focus on the involvement of Geln Stubbins as he has already been established as a subject at this episode's end.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 8 is now streaming on Hulu.
