The penultimate episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 lived up to the rest of the brilliant season with one of the biggest twists in the show so far. After the previous episode seemingly confirmed the identity of the killer, Sazz's protege, this episode managed to find a way to put a bigger twist to the tale.
As revealed in this episode, unlike what Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) assumed initially, the murderer was not Glen Stubbins (Paul Rudd in his second role in the series). Instead, this episode revealed that the stunt double who was mentioned earlier was Rex Bailey, a name that may sound unfamiliar but it's a face that is not.
This episode's ending seemingly confirmed the killer, but given the manner Only Murders in the Building Season 4 has twisted the stories from one end to another, it is too soon to confirm whether this is indeed the case.
Let us dive into the identity of Rex Bailey and decipher if he is indeed the criminal the trio has been looking for throughout the season.
*Warning- Major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 9 ahead.
Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 9: Who was Sazz's protege?
The previous episode of the show had already revealed that Sazz (Jane Lynch) had trouble with her protege, who was allegedly harassing her. But that episode seemed to indicate that Glen Stubbins was the protege that they had found out about.
This episode, hence, saw the trio trying to get in touch with the unconscious Glen, but they found out something shocking. Glen was not originally Sazz's protege and he stepped into the Ron Howard movie to replace Sazz's original protege, who was fired after an eventful incident with the director, something that Ron Howard (in his hilarious special appearance) told Charles and Oliver.
The trio had found out that the stuntman was called Rex Bailey but had no idea who he was. When out with Howard, Oliver and Charles managed to see his photograph, which Ron Howard kept in his phone as a part of all the actors and crew members he had banned from his movies.
The photograph revealed that Rex Bailey was none other than Marshall (Jin Ha), then an aspiring writer who took up the opportunity to be on a real movie set when Sazz offered him her counsel. It was revealed in this episode that Marshall had worked with Sazz and learned the craft from her and made his debut as a stuntman in Ron Howard's movie, where he was set on fire.
It was revealed that in his eagerness to show Howard his script, he burned the director's eyebrows off as he was not completely extinguished. This led to him being banned from Howard's movie. Glen replaced him at this point, leading to the twisted ending of the previous episode.
Is Marshall the real murderer?
As of now, it seems that Marshall was indeed the real murderer all along. There also seem to be some hidden hints about the same, which were shown in flashbacks in this episode. One crucial instance was when Glen Stubbins seemed to recognize Marshall after they met. This small sequence had big consequences for the story.
This episode also seemed to show a motive for the murder of Sazz. Mabel found a script from Sazz's beer carton whose title read Only Murders in the Building but the writer was listed as Sazz. This seemed to hint that Marshall may have murdered Sazz to steal the script idea, which led him to become the successful writer in Paramount's big-budget movie.
The upcoming episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 4, which will also serve as the finale, will confirm whether Marshall is indeed the killer.
Is Glen Stubbins dead?
Yes, indeed it is the second death of Paul Rudd in the show. Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 9 depicted that someone came to the hospital after Glen Stubbins regained consciousness and choked him to death with a pillow. Glen also seemed to recognize the person who did this.
At the end of the episode, it was also shown that Marshall had killed Glen. We are unsure if this was an assumption or indeed the flashback of the real event that took place.
Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 10 will solve this mystery for good. For now, you can catch Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 9 on Hulu.
