Outer Banks season 4 part 1 was released on Netflix on October 10, 2024. In this new season, the Pogues continue their quest to find the lost treasure of Blackbeard as JJ learns a shocking truth about his parentage. The group continues to stay firm in their goal of discovering one mystery after another amid all the personal conflicts and deadly enemies they have accrued for themselves.

Then suddenly in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1, fans were left reeling as a quintessential Pogue, JJ Maybank, uncovered life-changing information: he was born a Kook. That revelation comes after JJ has come to discover his biological father is Chandler Groff, a very connected and influential figure on the island, and his real mother is Larissa Genrette. Such an unearthing forces everything JJ thought he knew to smash, especially about his identity and loyalties toward the Pogue lifestyle.

However, just because he was born a Kook does not mean JJ is ready to embrace that world. Knowing, even if it was just revealed that truth, would not make JJ less of a Pogue-minded individual; indeed, his instinctive response would be to shut the door to becoming a Kook. It is this internal conflict that drives most of the tension in Part 1 of Season 4. The audience is left wondering if he will stay a Pogue or be swayed by his newfound lineage.

How does JJ in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 react to learning he’s a Kook?

In Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1, it came out that Chandler Groff is his real father, while he has Kook lineage. JJ has been in denial about this because he had thought himself to be the best Pogue throughout his life devoted to friends and a Pogue lifestyle. The notion of him belonging in the upper-crust Kooks lines shook him to his core. First, JJ does not accept the story of Luke due to his father's past deceit and manipulations.

Total denial is what the show's creators, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, insist that JJ's reaction is. He just can't accept that the identity he'd worked so hard to maintain turns out to be based on a lie. The deep mistrust in Luke is one thing adding to disbelief-not letting him open up his arms to embrace the truth about his parentage. But with time, JJ realizes that everything in his life had rather been based on circumstances, beyond his control.

What does this mean for JJ’s relationship with the Pogues?

This puts pressure on JJ's relationships with the Pogues in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 as he's found out he's a Kook for so long, himself admitting to being the living expression of a Pogue: a boy who lives life on the edge, loyal to friends, and constantly against the powerful moneyed side of the Kooks at every turn. Now that puts that whole dynamic under pressure.

Because JJ is haunted by his identity crisis, he cannot find the endurance to keep the dazed, independent spirit he once had. His friends, specifically John B and Kiara, are supportive, yet at the same time worried about how JJ would react to it all.

The fear is that JJ's failed journey for his identity can become a journey to a dark side, especially when he feels separated from the group. Being always in a very tight-knit unit, JJ's inner turmoil can question their loyalty and force him to choose between his roots and his blood.

Will JJ embrace his Kook heritage or stay a Pogue?

The ultimate question still hanging over JJ's head is whether he will embrace his Kook heritage or whether he'll find himself staying grounded in the Pogue lifestyle in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1.

Although he never cares for the feeling of being a Kook, the truth of his bloodlines might drag him into the very world he despises in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1. Probably, Chandler Groff's wealth and influence open doors for JJ that he's never before walked through. And then, too, if JJ has some interest in his Kook heritage, this will also perhaps separate him from friends such as the Pogue boys as their passions intensify with their treasure hunt quests.

On the other hand, his loyalty to his friends and abhorrence of the Kook lifestyle may keep JJ straight in the Pogue camp. The writers have hinted that this storyline will go in exciting ways, and JJ's ultimate choice will have massive repercussions on the character as well as on the overall dynamics of the group.
