Hulu is set to release a three-episode documentary series called Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini on June 20, 2024. The series is based on the real-life case of the disappearance and kidnapping hoax of Californian resident Sherri Papini in 2016.
In November 2016, Papini went missing from her home, prompting a police search and media frenzy. She reappeared three weeks later, with extensive injuries on her body, and claimed that she had been kidnapped and subjected to torture. However, after years of investigation, it was revealed that Sherri Papini had fabricated the entire story.
The official summary for Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini reads:
"Keith and Sherri Papini's seemingly idyllic life is shattered when Sherri vanishes from their rural California neighborhood, triggering a frenzied search that becomes news around the world. But once Sherri is found, a new nightmare begins."
What happened to Sherri Papini? Story explored
In November 2016, Sherri Papini went missing from her house in Redding, California. Her husband, Keith found her phone and earbuds on the road near their house after picking up their two children from daycare. He reported Sherri's disappearance to the police on the same day. Multiple news channels also reported on the case, and Sherri's disappearance quickly spread all across the media.
After three weeks, Sherri Papini was found alive on a road in Yolo County, tied in restraints and with many bruises and injuries all over her body. She claimed that she had been kidnapped by two Hispanic women who had tied her up in a basement and physically abused her. However, many law enforcement agencies found inconsistencies in her story and the supposed kidnapping.
After six years of investigation, Sherri Papini was arrested in 2022 on charges of mail fraud and making false statements to a federal agency. She admitted that she had made up the story and harmed herself to fabricate proof of the kidnapping. It was revealed that she had been staying with her ex-boyfriend James Reyes in Southern California during the time she was missing.
Sherri Papini was sentenced to 18 months in prison in September 2022, but released in August 2023 and placed in a halfway house. She is now divorced from her husband Keith, who has sole custody of their two children.
