Max's Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is back, but with a new twist. The second season of the teen thriller is now titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School and is set to release on May 9, 2024.
Since the original run of the Pretty Little Liars series (2010-2017) on ABC, the franchise has spawned multiple spinoffs such as Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. However, they did not enjoy the success of its predecessor and were canceled after one season.
With the release of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin in 2022, the franchise gained new life on the streaming service Max. Following critical acclaim, the series has been greenlit for a second season which is to be titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. Here's everything to know about the upcoming show.
When will Pretty Little Liars: Summer School release?
The second season of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which is subtitled Summer School, is set to premiere on May 9, 2024. The first two episodes will be immediately available to watch, while the rest of the six episodes will be released on a weekly basis on Thursdays. The second season is expected to end with its final episode on June 20.
The show will be available to stream exclusively on Max.
What is Pretty Little Liars: Summer School about? Details explored
The first season of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is set in Millwood, Pennsylvania. Described as a slasher drama, five teenage girls receive cryptic messages from a person called 'A' who accuses their mothers of a horrible crime that took place on New Year's Eve in 1999.
The girls eventually team up to work together and figure out the identity of the mysterious 'A'. The season ended with some shocking revelations, including unmasking the killer threatening the girls. With 'A' still on the loose, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is set to explore what is in store for the characters next. The second season is also expected to reveal what happens to one character after their fate was left unknown in the first season following a brutal attack.
According to a March 2024 article by Cosmopolitan, Summer School will have a new female villain. In the interview, co-creator Lindsay Calhoon Bring revealed:
"The scares are a bit bigger, and badder and bolder. We do have a new villain... And this horror villain is going to test every one of the girls and they’ll go on their own personal journey."
Meanwhile, fellow co-creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said:
"Our villain is a female figure of horror, which is something we really wanted to explore in our female-centered horror show. We also wanted our villain to feel quite apocalyptic and terrifying. And because most of our season is set during summer—besides taking inspiration from from our favorite slashers—we wanted it to feel a little more apocalyptic, like something like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or even Midsommar."
Sacasa continued:
"There’s a lot of really horrific imagery tied to movies like that and we wanted to tap into those a little bit. And we also knew we had to make a villain scarier than A and it was pretty scary in season 1."
With the new villain reportedly called Bloody Rose, the Little Liars are poised to face greater challenges while navigating friendships, romances, and heartbreaks.
