Prime Target plot
Prime Target begins with a shocking explosion at an ice cream shop in Baghdad, where a mother and daughter are caught in a tragic incident. The blast reveals an underground structure housing a massive armillary sphere, connecting the narrative to ancient history.
The focus then shifts to Cambridge, where Edward Brooks, a gifted postgraduate mathematics student, explores patterns in prime numbers. His prime number theories turn out to be worse for him.
Edward's mentor, Professor Mallinder, has a mysterious influence on what is happening. Mallinder's secretive actions, such as spying on Edward and destroying his research, raise concerns. His mysterious death, along with a strange suicide note, hints at a bigger troubling conspiracy at play. Edward is expelled from the university, which makes him face strong opponents.
The story links old discoveries in Baghdad to Edward's research and introduces Andrea Lavin, Mallinder's wife, who helps explain the connection to the House of Wisdom excavation site.
At the same time, NSA agents, led by Taylah Sanders, are looking into the serious risks of Edward's discoveries. The NSA worries about the dangerous misuse of prime numbers, and this fear gets worse by betrayal and assassinations within the organization.
