Prime Video’s My Lady Jane recently saw the release of its first season in June 2024. Created by Gemma Burgess, the series is a historical fantasy show inspired by the 2016 YA novel My Lady Jane.

The series lead, Lady Jane Grey, played by Emily Bader, is based on the historically accurate figure of Jane Grey, an English noblewoman who was the queen of England and Ireland for a period of 9 days.

The series itself focuses on the circumstances that led to the short reign, and its official synopsis reads:

“Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guildford live during the reign of Edward, son of Henry VIII. She unexpectedly finds herself crowned queen overnight and becomes the target of criminals who want her throne and her head.”

However, despite the kind of success My Lady Jane season 1 received, Prime Video has responded by canceling season 2 of the show, with no clear reason being revealed for the same.

My Lady Jane season 2 canceled despite a successful first season

In what comes as a surprising move, My Lady Jane has been canceled by Prime Video, something that was said to be done due to an apparent lack of viewership. While the first season received positive reviews and resulted in a dedicated fan base, certain factors suggested that the series does not have a large enough viewer base to warrant a second season.

According to Deadline, the fact that season 1 of the show was not part of Nielsen's Top 10 weekly streaming rankings upon its release was one of the major reasons to cancel its second season. The show itself presented a parodied story of Lady Jane Grey, who is often referred to as the ‘9-day-Queen.’

Forced to take over the throne at the age of just 15, Jane Grey was brutally killed after 9 days. However, the Prime series took on a dramatized, humorous form, and showed Lady Jane navigating a world filled with Ethians, who are shape-shifting creatures.

While the first season of the show ended on a cliffhanger, teasing a second season, that will not be happening as of now. The period drama took on a unique approach towards actual historical events and offered a fresh, whimsical take on English Royalty.

Apart from Emily Bader who took on the starring role, other notable faces in the series included that of Edward Bluemel, who fans will know for his time on the popular show, Sex Education. Further, the likes of Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, and Jim Broadbent made for an impressive cast.

Even the fact that My Lady Jane season 1 boasted a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating did not work in its favor. While fans are bound to be disappointed, the show seemingly needs a miracle in order to be revived. Prime Video may have canceled it for the time being, but considering the fan base and the ending of season 1, things might as well change in the future.

Season 1 of My Lady Jane was released with eight episodes towards the end of June. One of the factors assumed to have contributed to its reduced streaming hours might be the Paris Olympic Games, which may have led to a low viewership for the Prime Video show.

The entire season 1 of My Lady Jane continues to be available on Prime Video.
