Born Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramirez on February 29, 1960 in Texas, Ramirez endured a traumatic childhood at the hands of his abusive father whose physical and mental torments left him psychologically damaged. Added to this was the influence of his older cousin, another abusive man who taught him how to commit crimes.

As per a report published by CNN on June 9, 2013, the subject of Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes took to drugs early on in his life. After moving to Los Angeles, he took to frequent burglaries to fund his drug consumption.

He went on a murder spree in the Greater Los Angeles and later the San Francisco Bay Area over the course of 14 months, from April 1984 to August 1985. He reportedly murdered at least 14 people during various break-ins.

Since his crimes mostly took place in the afternoon, he earned the monikers, the Night Stalker, the Walk-In Killer, and the Valley Intruder. At last, he was convicted and sentenced to death in 1989. Ramirez died in 2013 while awaiting execution.

Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes seeks to shed some new light on the life and crimes of the notorious criminal by bringing to the fore more than 25 hours of audio recordings, most of which have not been heard before. Many of the recordings are eye-opening interviews with Ramirez's family, friends and wife. Several interviews with the killer himself will also feature in the docuseries.

The synopsis of Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes on IMDb reads:

“Through exclusive audio interviews with Richard Ramirez, his family and his wife, this documentary explores how a twisted boyhood and drug addiction enabled a troubled young man to become an infamous serial killer.”

The series is executive produced by Amy Goodman Kass, Elizabeth Fischer, Alexa Danner, Andy Berg, and Liz Cole.
