Ricky Gervais has announced a new world tour titled 'Ricky Gervais: Mortality,' which will run through late 2024 and 2025 before ending with a Netflix special of the same name. The comedian announced the new stand-up comedy tour via a post on his official Instagram account on June 27, 2024.

In a general press statement, the comedian elaborated on the tour, stating:

"We’re all gonna die. May as well have a laugh about it. Mortality looks at the absurdities of life. And death. Bring it on."

Meanwhile, dates, venues, and other details will be released soon. Interested patrons can keep an eye on the comedian's social media for such details as when they are released.

Ricky Gervais to release fourth special with Netflix

The upcoming Netflix special to be released at the end of Rick Gervais' world tour will be the fourth by the comedian for the streaming service. The comedian has previously launched three other specials on Netflix: Humanity, SuperNature, and Armageddon.

Armageddon remains his most successful collaboration with the streaming service, with the show winning Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television at the 2023 Golden Globes, even as it drew criticism about jokes about cancer patients.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has defended such controversial content, speaking in a New York Times interview on May 28, 2022:

"I think it’s very important to the American culture generally to have free expression. We’re programming for a lot of diverse people who have different opinions and different tastes and different styles, and yet we’re not making everything for everybody. We want something for everybody but everything’s not going to be for everybody. Nobody would say that what he does isn’t thoughtful or smart. You just don’t agree with him."

A brief overview of Ricky Gervais's career

The actor-comedian started his career at the turn of the century, getting his first recurring cast role in the late-night satire show, The 11 O'Clock Show. He subsequently had his first major role with The Office, the British mockumentary, which spawned an American show of the same name after its release.

The comedian released his first stand-up special in 2003, Animals, followed by another special the following year, Politics. In 2005, he appeared in 13 episodes of the sitcom Extras.

The comedian then went on to direct two films in 2009 and 2010, The Invention of Lying and Cemetery Junction. He started his comedy-animated show The Ricky Gervais Show in the latter year and then starred in the travel documentary show An Idiot Abroad.

In 2011, he co-created the mockumentary show Life's Too Short with Stephen Merchant and Warwick Davis and starred in seven episodes. The next main show for Gervais was in 2012, when he assumed the titular role of Derek in the show Derek.

In 2019, the comedian starred in 18 episodes of the black comedy drama After Life, playing the lead role of Tony Johnson on the show created and written by him as well.

Aside from his television and film career, Ricky Gervais also hosted two radio shows: The Ricky Gervais Show from 2001 to 2005 with XFM and Ricky Gervais Is Deadly Sirius on SiriusXM from 2017 to 2019.
