The series picks up where the film Sausage Party left, and the living food items are the dominant species left in the world. The main characters (Frank, Brenda, Barry and Sammy) are set to leave a mark and build their very own food community. This is when disaster strikes Foodtopia. Mysterious rainclouds gather over and start destroying food items with rain that floods the streets.
Ultimately, unable to deal with the problem, the food items must find a human to help them and re-establish their delicious world.
The series isn't a film version called Sausage Party 2 in its truest sense. Instead of having the animated characters meet their real-life versions as foreshadowed in the first movie, the spinoff series takes a different plot route. Actor and executive producer Seth Rogen decided to double up on the crude and adult humour in the film and turn it into an episodic series, a decision he explained in an interview for TVInsider:
"We’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’s got all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food s*x. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now."
