The murder of Joleen Cummings shocked the community of the Fernandina Beach area in May 2018. Cummings, the employee of a hair salon, had been last seen at her workplace and was reported missing by her mother on May 14.

Season 13 episode 1 of See No Evil tracks the discovery of her murderer by a colleague, Kimberly Kessler, under Jennifer Sybert's alias. The prosecutors in the case suspected that Kimberly had dismembered Joleen's body and discarded the pieces after the latter found out about her real identity.

The See No Evil episode, titled She's Fake, showcases Joleen Cummings' murder as it airs on Investigation Discovery on August 7, 2024, at 9 pm EST. The official synopsis reads:

"In Fernandina Beach, Fla., cosmetologist Joleen Cummings goes missing after an appointment, her last at Tangles Salon; CCTV footage shows her car in an isolated parking lot in the middle of the night; a closer look reveals an unlikely suspect."

Who was Joleen Cummings?

Joleen Cummings, the mother of three, was a hairstylist at a salon in Yulee, Florida. Joleen graduated from Hilliard Middle-Senior High School in 2002 and went on to become the mother of one. The relationship with the father ended soon, and she began pursuing cosmetology in Jacksonville.

Joleen met Jason Cummings in 2012 and the two settled together soon after. Jason and Joleen had two sons, and she started working as a hairdresser at the Tangles Hair Salon.

On May 13, Joleen was supposed to meet Jason at the Hilliard. She failed to pick her children up from Jason. Joleen was known to be a true friend as First Coast News reported her long-time friend, Brooke Harley, reportedly shared:

“We could go months without hanging out and when we did, it was just like we picked up right where we left off, like the best friend in the world to have."

Anne Johnson, Joleen's mother, found the situation to be suspicious when she reported Cummings to the Fernandina Beach Police Department as a missing person.

What happened to Joleen Cummings?

The 34-year-old mother of three, Joleen Cummings, was last seen leaving her workplace at Tangles Hair Salon after closing shop around 5:00 pm local time on May 12. The authorities contacted the owner of the establishment who mentioned Jennifer Sybert, a new employee, as the person Joleen had been with before her disappearance.

According to Oxygen, as the authorities reached out to Sybert, she refused to be part of the investigation and shared that Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper stated:

"She decided she didn’t want to have any part of the police. As she leaves, she said, ‘Hey, I’m quitting. You can mail my check. I can’t be involved in any police activity,’ which is a concern.”

A tip came in on May 15 when the officers discovered Joleen's Ford Expedition at a Home Depot parking space, per First Coast News. The surveillance footage pinned Sybert to the crime and further blood evidence inside the salon increased suspicion. The officers realized that Jennifer Sybert was a false identity for Kimberly Kessler.

Further video evidence of Kimberly discarding trash bags and purchasing cleaning items with an electrical knife led prosecutors to believe that she had killed Joleen and dismembered her body to throw it away in the trash. Joleen's body was never found.
