Why did Laura Rideout kill Craig Rideout?
Episode 4 of Season 11 of See No Evil brings to light the heinous murder of Craig Rideout as his disfigured and tarp-covered body was found in a field in Yates County. Prosecutors in the case argued that Craig had reportedly been strangled by his ex-wife, Laura Rideout, in his Penfield home basement.
Craig and Laura had been married since 1993 and together, they shared seven children. However, the size of the family took its toll on the financial side of things and Laura reportedly chose to stay in denial. The family moved to a more modest house while they faced bankruptcy.
Laura Rideout filed for a divorce in the summer of 2014 and began an affair with their widowed family friend, Paul “P.J.” Tucci. Most of their children moved in with Laura while the youngest two stayed with Craig. However, Laura and Paul planned to move to North Carolina around July 2016 when the former wished for her youngest children to move with her.
Thus began an ugly custody battle wherein Colin Rideout and Alexander Rideout became involved as they took their mother's side in the ordeal. A few days before Craig's death, Colin sent an angry email cc'ing members of the family and accusing him of threats, lies, and abuse. He mentioned in the email,
“You are a chronic liar, and I’m sick of you dragging my mother through this contorted divorce while you abuse the court system to try and retain control over her life.”
The same email chain was uploaded to Facebook by Alexander Rideout. The boys shared a stormy relationship with their father. In an interview with News 10 NBC, Colin Rideout shared from behind the bars,
"I did not respect or admire the man, he was likable. I could have enjoyable conversations with him and we could talk about history or economics or philosophy, but at a certain point I felt it was irresponsible of me to separate that from his personal conduct."
According to NBC affiliate News 10, the separation between Laura and Craig did not occur amicably and an ugly custody battle followed. The eldest son, Colin, shared with the outlet,
"It was not a good environment and not one I thought children should be in."
The motive behind Craig Rideout's murder was determined to be the custody battle and bad blood.
