Why was Joseph Porter arrested? Details explored
According to court records, Joseph Porter lived with his husband in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2017, he met Cristina, a resident of Edina, Minnesota, through Facebook, and the former moved in with her in her apartment.
Prodan and Porter shared a tumultuous relationship as the authorities in the area often received calls from the residence, including one on the day she disappeared, per the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
As per Arkansas Online, Cristina was reportedly subjected to domestic violence, due to which she obtained a restraining order against Porter. However, he violated the order and was convicted in December 2017. Despite the repercussions, Joseph Porter returned to her house on January 4, 2018, and her body was discovered on January 6.
According to Fox9 Minneapolis, Cristina's body was found by the New Orleans Fire Department inside a shipping container in a junkyard.
Where is Joseph Porter now?
The investigations led to Joseph Porter as they looked into cellphone records following Cristina Prodan’s disappearance. Her phone ping responded to a tower in Arkansas, which led the authorities to the area. At the time of his arrest, Joseph was with burn injuries on his face.
He confessed to killing Cristina in a fit of rage wherein he punched her multiple times and held her in a chokehold. He then transferred her body in a suitcase and drove her in his 1995 Honda Accord to burn her body. He was charged with second-degree murder and was eventually sentenced to 20 years and 10 months—a higher sentence than intended as he concealed the body as well, per CBS News.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Hennepin County Prosecutor Mike Freeman sharing in a public statement,
“This was a heinous murder and it took police and our office months to put together the evidence necessary to bring about this guilty plea. But we were not going to let him get away with just 15 years for his despicable actions, and we were successful in getting him the additional time he deserves.”
Joseph Porter is serving his time at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights and is expected to be released in November 2034.
