The cold-blooded murder of the IT specialist and father of seven, Craig Rideout, hit the headlines in 2016. Craig had been in the middle of a custody battle involving his youngest two children after his wife, Laura, had divorced him over bankruptcy.

On July 20, a body found in a field in Yates County, fifty miles away from Craig's house, was identified as belonging to him. He was brutally strangled, and his face was chemically burned to allegedly prevent identification.

The See No Evil episode titled The Devil's Bathtub showcases the details of Craig Rideout's murder as it airs on July 9, 2024, at 7 p.m. EST on Investigation Discovery. The official synopsis reads,

"In 2016, father Craig Rideout is reported missing after a strange home intrusion; within hours, police find a body matching Craig's description fifty miles away; using surveillance footage and forensics, detectives unravel an unbelievable plot."

Who was Craig Rideout? Details explored

Craig Wallace Rideout was born on April 24, 1966, to parents Richard "Dick" Holman Rideout and Agnes "Nessie" Rideout in Pittsford, New York. Craig grew up in Monroe County with his elder sister, Robbyn Drew. Their father, Dick, was a WWII Navy veteran and an ex-employee of Eastman Kodak, while his mother, Nessie, was a travel agent for local executives.

Craig graduated from Pittsford Mendon High School in 1984 and went on to study economics at Union College. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta in college, and he graduated in 1988. He earned a CFA in 1991 while working as a senior technical specialist at Federated Clover Investment Advisors from March 1989. He had started off working for the same company as an analyst-programmer.

Robyn described her brother sharing,

“He was a wonderfully funny individual with an astute sense of humor. He liked reading. He liked music. He loved his family.”

Craig had met Laura Asam at a bar in a Rochester pub. Laura had been studying in Buffalo after her family moved from Syracuse. The two started seeing each other and went on to tie the knot in January 1993. They gave birth to their son, Colin, followed by Alexander, Andrew, Elizabeth, Julia, Patrick, and Madeline.

Given that the family size grew overnight, Craig reportedly struggled to keep the family afloat financially. As a result, this had consequences for the dynamics as well. Laura was in denial of their circumstances and chose to believe that Craig was hiding money.

She filed for divorce in 2014 and went on to nurture a relationship with a widowed family friend, Paul “P.J.” Tucci. An ugly custody battle primarily drove Laura to murder Craig on July 20, 2016, as her two eldest sons, Colin and Alexander, helped her in the ordeal.
