Senna docuseries: Netflix reveals official release date for Ayrton Senna’s story

Senna is an upcoming Netflix miniseries about the life and career of Formula 1 driver, Ayrton Senna. The series was created by Vicente Amorim, in partnership with Ayrton's family, and is produced by Fabiano Gullane and Caio Gullane. The series features six episodes, co-directed by Vicente Amorim and Júlia Rezende.

The Netflix series is a biographical series that chronicles the career and personal life of the Brazilian Formula One driver, Ayrton Senna. He became one of the greatest racing drivers in motorsport history until a tragic racing accident took his life 30 years ago.

The show's official synopsis, as per Netflix, reads:

"Fascinated by cars since childhood, Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna became a sports legend — until tragedy struck, changing Formula 1 forever."

The Netflix series has been in development since 2020. It took almost three years to finalize the cast and to start filming, which took place at the end of 2023. The first trailer for the series was released on April 30, 2024, one day, before the 30th death anniversary of the legendary race driver.

On July 18, 2024, Netflix announced on its official X account that the series will premiere on Friday, November 29, 2024.

In his stellar career, Ayrton Senna won the prestigious Formula One World Drivers' Championship thrice in 1988, 1990, and 1991. Additionally, he also won 41 Grands Prix, set 65 pole positions, and collected 80 podiums in a span of 10 years from 1984 until his untimely death in 1994.

Ayrton is portrayed by the talented Brazilian actor and musician, Gabriel Leone. His most memorable roles include playing Guilherme Lovatelli in the telenovela Hidden Truths and another motorsport legend, Alfonso de Portago, in the film Ferrari.

The series begins in 1981 with Ayrton moving to England to compete in the Formula Ford race, which he ultimately wins. The show highlights the biggest achievements of his decade-long career, during which he worked with the Formula One teams, Lotus, Williams, and McLaren.

The six-episode series also covers his romantic and personal relationships, including his fraught dynamic with his part-time teammate and rival, Alain Prost. It ends with Ayrton's tragic death on May 1, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix held in Imola, Italy. He was 34 years old at the time.
