Severance season 1 ended on a dramatic cliffhanger that left the viewers with more questions than answers. In the final episode, Dylan (Zach Cherry) activated the Overtime Contingency, which enabled the 'innie' selves of Mark, Helly, and Irving to briefly navigate their 'outie' lives. Exposure to the outside world gave way to a cascade of revelations.

The official logline for Severance season 2 reads,

"In season 2, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe."

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stiller talked about Mark's character arc in Severance season 2, saying,

"For me, a through line in this series has always been about Mark trying to grieve his wife. But then, we find out that his wife is alive. Is Outie Mark going to find out that Innie Mark knows? And how is Outie Mark going to deal with that?"

He added,

"At the same time, I think we’ve sort of developed a relationship with Innie Mark and Helly on the inside that feels like it’s going somewhere. So there’s a natural tension that’s growing there between Outie Mark’s interests and Innie Mark’s interests."

The revelation that Mark's presumed-dead wife, Gemma, is, in reality, Ms. Casey- the Wellness Counselor at Lumon, left room for multiple storylines at the end of season 1.

Also, Helly discovered that she is actually Helena Eagan, a member of the powerful Eagan family that owns Lumon. She willingly underwent the severance to show the people it was a safe and futuristic procedure. In the final moments, she tried publicly exposing Lumon but was cut off mid-sentence.

Irving's innie found out about his outie's investigation into the dark secrets of Lumon, something quite contradictory to his rule-abiding nature. He also saw his feelings for Burt as one-sided, as Burt had a life outside Lumon. As their rebellion came to light, their fates were left uncertain at the end of season 1.

Severance season 2's trailer picks up where season 1 left off, showing Mark S. back at Lumon as an employee. He gets to his cubicle only to find three new co-workers, and Milchick welcomes him with balloons. Cobel is also a part of the trailer, leaving fans curious about her fate in season 2.
