After the conclusion of Severence season 1, it was anticipated that the sequel would arrive sometime in 2024. However, due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, like many other series and films, the show was delayed. The second season began filming on October 3, 2022, just six months after the first season concluded.

The filming was initially scheduled to finish on May 8, 2023, but it finally wrapped up on April 23, 2024, due to the strikes. The sequel was announced to be greenlit three days before the finale of the first season aired.

Ben Stiller, who executively produced the series and directed six episodes, expressed his excitement for season 2 in an official statement:

"It’s really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show — and the level of fan engagement. It has been a long road bringing Severance to television."

He further said:

"I first read Dan’s pilot over five years ago. It has always been a multi-season story, and I’m really happy we get to continue it. I’m grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Keir!"
