The baffling death of Amanda Antoni was explored in detail in Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4, episode 2 titled Body in the Basement. Netflix renewed the highly popular documentary series and premiered Volume 4 on July 31, 2024.
For the unversed, Amanda Antoni was found in the basement of her Calgary house by her husband, Lee Antoni, on 26 October 2015. She was covered in a massive pool of blood.
Soon after the episode was released, it sparked discussions across the internet. Many users on Reddit shared their views and pointed out that Lee Antoni's reaction was "weird" when he found his wife dead. A Redditor went forward and accused him of negligence on a post by R/Unsolved Mysteries:
"Definitely. If he had called 911 or the police right then for a welfare check, she’d be alive."
As shown in episode 2, Lee Antoni was the last person she talked to over the phone before her death. The Reddit users accused the husband due to his casual nature of checking up on Amanda Antoni following the abrupt end to the call.
"I find it weird that her hubby was on the phone to her, heard the dog bark and yelp, phone disconnects and he can't get in contact with her again, but waits 44 hrs before he came home," a user commented.
"I’m so stumped here. Her husband's reaction was bizarre. If I were cut off from my husband in that way, and never received any response, I would’ve had someone check on him, or went home myself," a third user mentioned.
"One thing I found strange was that her husband was on the phone with her until the exact moment something went wrong, almost as though he was waiting for things to go wrong or maybe an alibi of some sort?" another person wrote.
Other netizens continued to suspect Lee Antoni of his wife's death, calling his reaction "strange":
"I just watched the episode and this case really had me baffled. I find her husband's reaction very strange..the fact that their last call was cut off abruptly and he couldn't contact his wife for a long period of time and didn't notify anyone to go check on her that's weird," another person wrote.
"This is truly a mystery. There is something very off about the husband, but what the heck would be his motive? no insurance policy, she wasn't messing around, was he? He's talking to her then all of a sudden, nothing. But he doesn't call ANYONE to do a welfare check," a Reddit user mentioned.
Why are some fans accusing the husband of negligence in Amanda Antoni's death?
As depicted in the Netflix docuseries, Amanda Antoni was very close to her husband Lee Antoni. She was supposed to join her husband on a trip in the days leading to her demise, however, she stayed back due to heavy migraines.
When her husband returned, he was shocked to find Amanda lying in a pool of blood in their basement. She had an injury on the right side of her head. Her phone was shattered and there was a tipped-over chair and a ceramic piggy bank beside her.
Lee had talked to Amanda Antoni on a Saturday evening and returned on Monday when he found his deceased wife. As shown in Unsolved Mysteries, he heard their dog Ruby howl and growl over the phone as she tried to soothe the pet. This happened during his last conversation with his wife.
The phone abruptly stopped working and he heard a crushing sound. Upon attempting to contact her again, the phone went to voicemail. He also received no response to his texts. Although Amanda Antoni did not call him back anymore, he figured she was just preoccupied with other things and that there was a good reason for the call's sudden termination.
Users on Reddit thus accused Lee of negligence in Amanda's death because he did not care to meet her instantly when she did not respond after the phone call ended abruptly. As per the Redditors, it would be normal for a spouse to check up on their partner if something seemed suspicious.
