At the end of the episode, Joe and her team rescued Congresswoman Hernandez and brought her back to US soil from the Mexican border. However, one of her team leaders Cody lost one of his subordinates in a car crash during the mission.
While Kyle dismissed the death as a sacrifice for the mission, Joe realised that she was putting lives at risk and had no choice in the matter. She fiercely said that the team must work to defend and recognise each other's efforts, otherwise there was no point in doing missions together.
The episode ended with Joe trying to calm her mind and prepare for the inevitable chaos ahead.
What was the incident that prompted the Lioness team to act in Special Ops: Lioness season 2 episode 1?
The reason for the beginning of the mission in Special Ops: Lionness season 2 episode 1 is revealed at the beginning of the episode itself, in the cold open.
A team of masked men in tactical gear orgnaise a hit at US Congresswoman Hernandez's house. They infiltrate her property, killing people in the house who stand in their way. When Hernandez hears the noise, she comes to investigate and tries to escape, but they take her captive.
Hernandez is taken captive because of one of her legislations: she was petitioning for the US military to operate within the country to deal with illegal immigration. Joe (played by Zoe Saldana), the head of the Lioness team, gets the development on the news.
Joe realises that she would soon be tasked with the responsibility of the Hernandez case, which is what catapults the story.
What plan of action did Mullins and Byron team decide upon in the White House?
Kaitlyn (played by Nicole Kidman) gets called in to the White House to discuss the strategy for extracting Hernandez in Special Ops: Lioness season 2 episode 1. They zero in on the Congresswoman's location due to a tracker on her person, and realise that she's being held across the border in Mexico, which makes it difficult for government teams to organise an official extraction.
Mullins and Byron make the official decision to involve Joe at this stage. They decide to deploy the Lioness and organise an operation against the Los Tigres Cartel, who are responsible for the kidnapping.
The mission brief for Joe is to gather intel on them and kill the leader of the cartel. Even though Joe protests, saying that the Lionesses don't gather intel, she's merely asked to do her job.
Mullins and Byron also make a plan for the rescue of Congresswoman Hernandez, with a team of soldiers known as the Grey Men. Joe realises that the mission might be very dangerous for her but had no choice but to comply.
What happened at the Mexican border in Special Ops: Lioness season 2 episode 1?
Joe and her team locate the Congresswoman at the Mexican border and make a plan to intercept her, in the climax of Special Ops: Lioness season 2 episode 1. However, the Mexican authorities get tipped off about their attack, so they have to find another way to make their exit across the border and back into the US.
Cody and his team handle the incoming forces by opening fire on them from their car. Meanwhile, Joe takes Hernandez via an exit point across a river. At a point, the Mexican forces almost overwhelm them before air support from the US finally arrives. That tilts the scales in favour of Joe and her team, who finally make it safe across the border.
Cody tells Joe about a team member they lost during the fight on the riverbank. She apologises to him and realises that he might not stay for the rest of the mission. He assures her that he might be back if she needs some urgent help from him.
Kyle later asserts that death is the price the team would have to pay for their missions. Joe vehemently disagrees and even punches him twice for almost getting them killed. She says that she won't tolerate a "cowboy attitude" on her team, and that unity and lives matter.
Joe then speaks to her husband Neal and her family on the phone, realising that the mission is a difficult one. With no signs of the road ahead being any easier, Joe tries to calm herself and catch her breath near the river. With that, Special Ops: Lioness season 2 episode 1 cuts to black.
