Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was one of the many exciting projects revealed for Disney's D23 Expo in 2024.
This upcoming Disney+ original series, set to premiere on December 3, 2024, focuses on a bunch of characters who start out living in a peaceful community, but after making a discovery on their home plane, get involved in a far more colorful and dangerous journey through the galaxy.
The series stars Jude Law as Jo Da Nawood, a Force user who comes across the much younger adventurer party of Wim (played by Ravi Cabot-Canyers), Fern (played by Ryan Kira Armstrong), KB (played by Kyriana Kratter) and Neel (played by Robert Timothy Smith).
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew casts several child actors
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew sets itself apart from most other installments in the franchise by focusing primarily on younger characters. The coming-of-age series provides a unique spin on the Star Wars formula by putting children at the center of the kind of intergalactic adventures that typically feature adults.
When interviewed for People magazine regarding his time working on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Jude Law described the experience as "joyful". When asked about his experience working with the child actors, he said:
"I had a wonderful time making this with everyone involved. Those four in particular who worked with me very closely were just great fun and incredibly professional, and I'm immensely proud to be a part of their crew."
The series was created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, who previously collaborated on Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first solo Spider-Man film to star Tom Holland and be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to kid-oriented programming, although featuring children characters in prominent leading roles is a relative rarity for the franchise.
Perhaps the highest-profile instance of the franchise using child actors happened during the prequel trilogy's The Phantom Menace, which featured Jake Lloyd as a young Anakin Skywalker before the character was aged in Attack of the Clones.
Disney appears to be banking on the proven track record Jon Watts and Christopher Ford had with the MCU Spider-Man films to produce this upcoming Disney+ series. When interviewed by People magazine, the two praised the dynamic between Jude Law and the child actors on set:
"Because he's with the kids all the time, he's also kind of felt like the co-director, co-producer with us and he's co-acting coach, you know, giving the kids tips, and they would look to him. He really became sort of a mentor figure to the kids as well."
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the latest Star Wars Disney+ series
Ever since Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, there have been many Stars Wars series released on the company's Disney+ streaming subscription service. Of particular note is The Mandalorian, which was the service's biggest launch title and served as Pedro Pascal's breakout role.
Since then, Disney has continued to put out several Disney+ shows based on the Star Wars IP, which have gotten a varied reception from fans and critics.
While series such as The Mandalorian and Andor have been relatively well-received, other original series such as The Book of Boba Fett have proved more contentious.
This is nothing new for the Star Wars franchise, which has been divisive in some way even with the release of George Lucas's prequel trilogy, and Disney's sequel trilogy.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is set to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service on December 3, 2024.
