Sunny episode 3: What to expect and major developments so far

Sunny episode 3, titled Mmmm, Hinoki, will return to Apple TV+ on July 17, 2024. So far, the series has shown Suzie (Rashida Jones), a woman in a futuristic Kyoto, teaming up with the titular domestic robot to learn more about her husband’s secrets. Her husband and their only son are reportedly missing after a plane crash.

Viewers are intrigued by the endings of episodes 1 and 2 and hope that Sunny episode 3 will provide some answers. They may expect to see more of Masa’s (Suzie’s husband, played by Hidetoshi Nishijima) role at the mysterious robotics company Imatech in the next episode, which is expected to continue the thriller tone of the previous two.

Episodes 1 and 2 were a little over thirty minutes long, so fans may expect Sunny episode 3 to have a similar runtime. As the mystery surrounding Masa’s life and work intensifies, viewers will accompany Suzie as she dives into them with her domestic robot.

Sunny episode 3: What awaits Suzie?

The official synopsis of the upcoming episode reads:

"Suzie, Sunny, and Mixxy make a discovery. Noriko pressures Suzie to have a proper funeral for Masa."

Sunny follows Suzie, an American woman living in a near-future Kyoto who has just lost her husband and only son to a plane crash. However, the viewers can see that there is more to it than meets the eye.

For instance, not many details are ever presented about the fate of Flight 405. Moreover, flashbacks show that there was an accident involving a robot in the near past where the robot went rogue and killed many people. It is implied that Masa had a role in covering up this incident.

The sense of mystery is fuelled by the fact that Masa never informed Suzie that he worked in a robotics company. Naturally, this comes as a shock to her when she learns it from one of his colleagues.

The colleague also brings her a robot designed especially for her by Masa. Episodes 1 and 2 show that initially cold to the robot, Suzie gradually warms up to it, eventually enlisting its help in trying to find out more about Masa’s work.

Sunny episode 3 might show the duo progressing a bit in their investigation. The synopsis tells us that Mixxy will also join the team. Mixxy is a bartender whom Suzie met in episode 1 while she was drinking away to drown her grief.

The relationship between Suzie and Sunny in Sunny episode 3 could have layers of complexities. Given her loneliness and depression, she will likely get closer to Sunny, who demonstrates many of Masa's mannerisms.

There is one mysterious plot line that might get more elaborate in the next episode. Episode 1 ends by showing that Suzie is being watched by a mysterious man. We might learn more about this in the coming episode.

The tension in Suzie's relationship with her mother-in-law might also find some space in Sunny episode 3. These two women have been grieving in their own ways. Will they eventually come together? The fans will have to wait to find out.

Most importantly, episode 3 might shed more light on what happened on that fateful day when the robot killed several people and exactly what role Masa had to play in that. Further, expect the mystery regarding Masa’s death or disappearance to get more complicated since the series will have ten episodes.

What lies ahead for the show?

Sunny is a heartwarming tale of the relationship between a robot and a human being. Though it runs like a mystery and thriller, there are moments of humor in the series involving cheeky exchanges between Suzie and Sunny. Sunny episode 3 may continue in the same vein, mixing mystery and banter.

This Apple TV+ and A24 series will run for a total of ten episodes. So far, there are no official statements regarding renewing Sunny for a second season. We will bring you updates regarding it when they are available from official sources.
