Sunny episode 4 was released on July 24, 2024, on Apple TV+. This Apple TV and A24 dark comedy series revolves around a woman named Suzie (Rashida Jones), who lives in a futuristic Tokyo and tries to unravel the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of her husband and son.
The official synopsis of Sunny episode 4, titled Sticky, is:
“The Yakuza make themselves known. Suzie searches for the truth about Masa’s lineage.”
The Yakuza, or gangsters, are introduced in episode 3 of the series. Hime, the mysterious blonde in episode 3, appears in Sunny episode 4 as well. It seems Masa, Suzie’s husband, knew Hime closely.
The Yakuza feature a lot more in this episode, as expected. Hime, the leader of one faction of the Yakuza, makes her men ransack Suzie’s home. It is clear that they are looking for The Dark Manual, obtaining which Hime will have a good chance of ascending in the internal hierarchy of the Yakuza.

Sunny episode 4: The Yakuza are after The Dark Manual
In episode 3, it is revealed that The Dark Manual is a code that can weaponize robots and make them perform specialized tasks. It is also implied that Masa is the creator of the Manual. The Dark Manual is mentioned in a crucial scene in Sunny episode 4.
In the latest episode, Hime is shown interacting with her elderly father, who appears to be the head of the Yakuza. It is clear that she wants to get a better post within the organization. However, her father asks her to fetch him The Dark Manual, and only then would he consider her request for a promotion.
In Sunny episode 4, the viewers finally learn that the people who were spying on Suzie all this while were actually reporting to Hime. In the last scenes of the episode, it is shown that while Suzie was away from home, Hime’s men ransacked her place and left it in a state of disarray.
It is apparent that Hime’s henchmen were looking for The Dark Manual. That code is the key to Hime’s progress within the Yakuza. This explains Hime’s mysterious involvement in the affairs of Masa and Suzie.
Did Masa and Hime know each other?
Sunny episode 4, like the previous ones, complicates the various mysteries surrounding Masa more than it clears them. For instance, the opening shots show Masa chasing down a man who owed him something and killing him eventually with a gun. After that, Masa meets Hime at a bar, where they appear to be close.
The viewer cannot help but wonder at this point, "Was Masa a member of the Yakuza?" This confuses the viewers about Masa’s ethical profile. However, Sunny episode 4 presents more mysteries about Masa. Towards the end of the episode, it is revealed that Masa’s biological father is still alive.
Not only does this fact go against what he had told Suzie once about his father, it also comes to light that three days before Masa’s reported death, he made his biological father the beneficiary of his insurance policy.
Sunny episode 4 sees Suzie once again having to confront the fact that she knew very little about the man she called her best friend and husband for so long. However, some welcome moments of joy in the episode stem from the ever-growing friendly chemistry between Suzie, Mixxy, and the titular domestic robot, Sunny.
What to expect from the next episode?
The next episode of the series, titled Joey Sakamoto, will be released on July 31, 2024, on Apple TV+. The official synopsis reads:
“Sunny and Suzie flee Kyoto with Mixxy to take refuge at her family's farm.”
As the synopsis hints and Sunny episode 4 also shows, the bond between Sunny, Suzie, and Mixxy will only grow stronger in the subsequent episodes. Additionally, since they have to flee Tokyo, it is clear that the interference from the Yakuza is increasing progressively.
The viewers may expect the subplot of Hime and her quest to rise higher in the Yakuza to get more screen time in the next episode. Further, the upcoming episode might shed some light on the mysterious disappearance of Masa and his son and Masa’s enigmatic past.
At the same time, The Dark Manual, one of the enduring motifs in the series so far, might continue to drive the plot forward in the next episode as well. Overall, the mysteries piled up so far might get some clarification in the next episode, or they might just pile up even more.
