Sunny episode 5, titled Joey Sakamoto, was released on Apple TV+ on July 31, 2024. The official synopsis of the episode reads:
“Sunny and Suzie flee Kyoto with Mixxy to take refuge at her family's farm.”
As the synopsis suggests, following the yakuza’s raid of Suzie’s home in episode 4, Suzie, Mixxy and Sunny have run away from Kyoto.
However, the final scenes of Sunny episode 5 show that the trio is still far from safe. In fact, the titular robot Sunny gets abducted at the end of the episode. It's also implied that Hime, the mysterious blonde, is behind the abduction.

Sunny episode 5: Hime is behind Sunny’s abduction
In the latest episode of Apple TV and A24’s dark comedy series Sunny, the robot Sunny, Suzie and Mixxy make their way through the woods to Mixxy’s family's farm, following the yakuza's ransacking of Suzie’s place in the last episode.
As the trio disembarks from the train and crosses the forest, a stranger can be seen following their trail. They eventually reach Mixxy’s farm and get a hospitable shelter.
However, Sunny episode 5 sees Sunny being able to access some of its memories hitherto inaccessible to her. Those memories contain glimpses of Masa and his shady past actions.
Sunny promises Suzie that it would try to access more of its memories so the mysteries surrounding Masa can be cleared up. However, the very next morning, Sunny is not found beside Suzie. Instead, she finds a note by the pillow, written in Japanese. To her horror, it also contains a prosthetic finger.
It leaves no doubt about the fact that it's Hime who ordered Sunny’s abduction. Also, it can be guessed that Sunny’s as yet unlocked memory potentially has incriminating evidence against Hime.
The final shot is a throwback to episode 3
Hime, leader of one faction of the yakuza, was introduced in episode 3 of the series. By Sunny episode 5, it was established that Hime was close with Masa and knew about his work on robotics. Further, she's now looking for The Dark Manual, obtaining which, she will get a promotion within the organization.
The prosthetic finger the final shot of the latest episode reveals belongs to Hime, who was seen wearing it in episode 3, In fact, during a tussle with Suzie in the basement of a club that hosts robot fighting tournaments, Hime’s prosthetic finger comes off as Suzie pushes her away.
Thus, the inclusion of the finger with the note is a clear message to Suzie sent by Hime. It was shown in episode 4 that Hime was observing every movement of Suzie. Thus, Hime sending her henchmen to track down her current location is only natural.
Who is Joey Sakamoto? Sunny episode 5 adds depth to Sunny’s character
The latest episode of Sunny focuses quite a bit on the eponymous robot. Joey Sakamoto, after whom the episode is named, is a moribund crow Sunny picks up in the woods, hoping to revive it. Later, Sunny reveals that by doing so, it was trying to understand what it felt like to be a mother.
When the crow Joey finally dies, viewers see a visibly shaken Sunny, which is not the only time Sunny is shown capable of displaying human emotions. Throughout Sunny episode 5, there is a cold war between Sunny and Mixxy as they vie for Suzie’s undivided attention.
Sunny admits that she's jealous of Mixxy when she spends time with Suzie. Thus, the latest episode of the series shows that Sunny’s personality is not altogether devoid of human feelings.
What awaits Suzie?
Sunny episode 5 gives viewers some glimpses of the marital life between Suzie and Masa. These snippets show that the marriage had its fair share of rough moments.
In fact, Masa’s conduct on many occasions seems irresponsible. Additionally, Suzie concedes to Sunny that Masa began to act strange a while before he had disappeared along with their only son.
With Sunny now kidnapped by the yakuza, Suzie's quest for the truth about Masa and his work will suffer a setback. However, together with Mixxy, she might also set out to find and retrieve Sunny.
