Sunny episode 5: Release date, what to expect, where to watch, and more

Sunny episode 5, titled Joey Sakamoto, will be released on July 31, 2024, on Apple TV+. The official synopsis of the upcoming episode reads:

“Sunny and Suzie flee Kyoto with Mixxy to take refuge at her family's farm.”

This Apple TV and A24 dark comedy series is about an American woman, Suzie (Rashida Jones), living in a futuristic Tokyo. Taking the help of the titular domestic robot, Sunny, and her friend Mixxy, she tries to solve the mysteries surrounding her husband Masa’s life and sudden disappearance

Sunny episode 5, as the synopsis suggests, will deal with the consequences of episode 4’s ending. Episode 4 shows that the Yakuza, especially Hime, are heavily invested in Masa’s work on The Dark Manual.

The entry of the criminal underworld in what already was a complicated mystery makes the mystery even more complicated.

What to expect from Sunny episode 5?

The beginning shots of Sunny episode 4 show that Masa and Hime knew each other quite closely. In fact, there are strong chances that Masa was a member of the Yakuza himself. In episodes 1 and 2 of Sunny, it has been made clear that Masa is an enigmatic character. The latest episode only adds to the enigma.

The upcoming episode of the series could shed some more light on the life of Masa. The episodes so far, while they have introduced newer facts about Masa’s life and work progressively, have also exposed some facts about the same.

For instance, by now it's clear that Masa is the creator of The Dark Manual, and the Yakuza are after it. Sunny episode 5 could show to what extent Masa was involved in the criminal underworld, and what implications his work in robotics carry in that context.

The episode is named Joey Sakamoto, and while the official synopsis doesn't hint at who this character could be, it's not difficult to guess that the titular character must somehow be linked to Masa, whose formal name is Masahiko Sakamoto.

The lineage of Masa is another concern the next episode might shed some light on. In the latest episode, it's discovered by Sunny that Masa’s biological father is actually still alive, and he was made the beneficiary of Masa’s insurance schemes three days before the mysterious disappearance of Flight 405, which Masa and his son had boarded.

Further, the subplot concerning Hime and her ambition to rise further up in the hierarchy of the Yakuza could feature in the next episode. Also, her connection to Masa and his robotics work might also be brought up.

Relationship between the human and the non-human has been one of the prominent themes of Sunny. In episode 4, the relationship between Suzie and her mother-in-law, Noriko, stiffens a bit. Suzie thinks Noriko is hiding things from her, while Noriko thinks that Suzie is not mourning Masa properly.

At the same time, the relationship between Suzie, Sunny and Mixxy keeps growing, and they go through various precarious adventures together, and help each other out. Thus, expect various sorts of relationships to feature in Sunny episode 5 as well.
