Sunny episode 7 was released on Apple TV+ on August 14, 2024. The show follows the story of an American lady named Suzie living in Japan, whose life turns upside down after her husband and son disappear in a fatal plane crash. As a consolation, Suzie receives Sunny, a domestic robot made by her husband’s electronic company.
The synopsis of the episode 7, titled There’s Been a Shift, reads:
“Mixxy is sucker-punched by the realities of her friendship with Suzie. Hime confronts Jin.”
The latest episode of the Apple TV and A24 dark comedy series takes the plot forward by clearing up some mysteries while complicating several others. For instance, the titular homebot Sunny, after it has been given back to Suzie following a brief period of abduction, is acting strangely.
Several plot elements presented in the series suggest that Hime has tampered with homebot Sunny's inner designs and hacked it in order to keep better track of Suzie. This could explain the openly antagonistic way in which the bot treats Suzie for much of the episode.
Sunny episode 7 shows the titular homebot acting strangely
In episode 5 of the series, the bot is abducted. The next episode sees Suzie successfully breaking into her husband Masa’s laptop. Hime takes the data in the laptop in exchange for sparing Mixxy’s life and giving Sunny back to Suzie.
Episode 6 ends with Sunny collapsing as soon as it reaches Suzie’s home. This depicts something is wrong with it. In episode 7, the homebot wakes up after seemingly undergoing a period of malfunction. Once it becomes operational again, its attitude towards Suzie shows a marked difference.
For instance, Sunny’s tone towards Suzie is quite insolent, and the bot is also visibly rude to Suzie when the latter asks it how it is feeling. This is a stark contrast to the sensibility and politeness Sunny has always shown to people in general. In fact, it even punches Mixxy in her stomach at one point.
As the episode moves forward, Mixxy suggests that Sunny may have been hacked. Her suspicion comes true as it is found out that Sunny has implanted a GPS tracker on Suzie’s wedding ring.
One particular shot in Sunny episode 7 reveals that it is Hime under whose instruction Sunny was programmed to plant the tracker. Thus, it is clear that the homebot was hacked after it was kidnapped by Hime’s men.
Sunny episode 7 shows a face-off between Hime and Jim
In episode 6, Hime’s father, the supremo of the yakuza, is revealed to be dead. With him gone, a power tussle within the organization is expected, and the latest episode of the show has taken this plot element forward.
Jim is Hime’s cousin and fellow contender for the top spot within the yakuza after Hime’s father’s demise. In episode 7, Hime, after a visit from the hospital, concludes that Jim killed her father in a bid to usurp his seat.
This suspicion leads her to confront Jim violently. However, an election with the yakuza is held, where Jim is proclaimed the new leader. This development in the sub-plot of Sunny will influence the future of Hime, and by extension, that of Suzie.
Whom does Hime kill in the opening scene of the episode?
Sunny episode 7 opens with Councilor Ito on his morning run. It appears that he is a popular political leader. A television footage of him clarifies that he is trying his best to curb the menace that is the yakuza.
However, as he finishes his workout routine, his homebot is pushed onto him, which causes him to tumble down the stairs and fatally hit his head on the floor. It is revealed that Hime is the one who pushed the homebot.
While the rest of Sunny episode 7 does not address the opening scene further, it shows the influence the yakuza have on politics and life in Japan in general. Hime also steals some data from Ito’s homebot. Hime, and the yakuza, could go to any length to get what they want.
Sunny episode 7 is currently streaming on Apple TV+. Episode 8 will be released on August 21, 2024.
