Sunny episode 8 was released on Apple TV+ on August 21, 2024. Starring Rashida Jones as Suzie, the show follows her character, as her life takes an unexpected turn when her husband and son mysteriously disappear in an alleged plane crash. The official synopsis of the episode, titled Trash or Not-Trash, reads:
“In the past, Masa slowly emerges from hikikomori.”
In many ways, the episode is a deviation from the previous ones, given that Masa gets significant screen time in Sunny episode 8, and much of his backstory is revealed in the process. The first half of the episode is a prolonged flashback, narrated by Hiromasa, Masa’s biological father.
After Suzie learns about her husband’s past for the first time, despite being married to him for years, she is gripped by mixed emotions. In the meantime, she and Mixxy discover a GPS signal that has remained static since the day Masa and Zen allegedly went missing after a flight accident.
Following the signal and reaching the place it points at, Suzie finds her son. However, Sunny episode 8 ends on a mysterious note as the titular homebot is seen taking a deep fall through the floor which cracks open. Whether this bit is part of a dream sequence or not, cannot be established yet.
Sunny episode 8 reunites Suzie and Zen, but the bliss is short-lived
Episode 7 of Sunny ends with Suzie and Mixxy coming face to face with an old man in the basement of a housing complex. The man tells Suzie that they both have things to talk about.
Sunny episode 8 takes off from this point. The old man turns out to be Hiromasa, Masa’s biological father. Hiomasa tells Suzie Masa’s life story, and she is left incredulous, wondering why Masa never told her the same.
As Suzie and Hiromasa discuss Sunny’s erratic behavior, Mixxy discovers that Sunny’s memory, which was hacked in episode 7, contains 4, not 3 GPS trackers. Hiromasa then tracks down each of the signals, remarking that they had been planted long before Sunny was abducted by the yakuza.
Hiromasa also finds out that one of the 4 trackers has remained static since the day Flight 405, on which Masa and Zen were supposed to travel, allegedly crashed and went missing. The trio follows the signal, also seeing Sunny doing the same.
As Sunny episode 8 nears its end, Suzie does see Zen after enduring days of grief. However, as she approaches him, a yakuza member grabs her by the neck. While Sunny, who has been malfunctioning for some time now, is seen to be standing beside Zen.
Just when Suzie expects something bad to happen to Zen, Sunny wounds the yakuza member, freeing Suzie. It also calls out to Suzie in a way that indicates that her normal functioning has been restored.
Sunny episode 8 ends with the titular homebot falling downward while calling out to Suzie, as the floor beneath them cracks open. However, it cannot be known for sure if this actually happens or if it is a dream sequence.
What does Sunny episode 8 reveal about Masa’s past?
The episode begins with Hiromasa’s voice-over, showing a young Masa who is striving to get his father’s attention and affection. However, filial love remains an impossibility for him even just before his father dies, following which Masa enters hikikomori, which is a state of extreme seclusion.
Masa’s mother Noriko calls Hiromasa for help since Masa refuses to interact with anyone in his isolation. When Hiromasa comes to visit Masa, he reveals the truth to him about being his biological father.
Hiromasa takes Masa, his son, to a cabin by a lake so he can spend his time there in peace. It is here that Masa’s interest in robotics develops as he starts modifying the trashbot designed by Hiromasa.
The flashback in Sunny episode 8 narrated by Hiromasa charts the progress of Masa from an unhappy and lonely child to a man who develops a keen interest in robotics. He grows up believing that robots can help man understand his humanity better.
What is Hime up to?
Sunny episode 8 features Hime only briefly, but she is seen in her usual avatar. Accompanied by another yakuza member, she is seen torturing the woman who probed into Sunny’s system in episode 7, and told Suzie that the homebot had been hacked by the yakuza.
Soon after extracting the confession from the woman, Hime sends someone to bring in Sunny once more. However, her plans are foiled as the closing scene of Sunny episode 8 shows that, contrary to Hime’s plans, Sunny is no longer willing to harm Suzie.
Episode 8 of Sunny is currently streaming on Apple TV+. Episode 9 will be released on August 28, 2024.
