Sunny episode 9 released on August 28, 2024, on Apple TV. Episode 8 had ended with Sunny falling down as the floor beneath her cracked open. The latest episode adds some context to that mysterious ending and also shows the past of several key characters.

Titled Who's in the Box?, the synopsis of Sunny episode 9 reads:

“Sunny looks inside herself.”

The succinct synopsis gives out how much of episode 9 is a memorial reconstruction of events that take place inside Sunny’s system, as the homebot goes through several past episodes one after the other. At the end of a harrowing self-assessment, Sunny decides to wipe her memory.

Episode 9 takes the form of an 80s Japanese game show, with Sunny trapped as a participant in it. The game show is titled Should Sunny Wipe Herself?. The absurdist depiction of past traumas in the form of the game show is likely how Sunny’s system decides to process her memories.

Sunny episode 9: Sunny wipes her memory

The stylized and surreal ending of episode 8 may have prompted many viewers to wonder if it was a part of a dream sequence. The opening shots of Sunny episode 9 imply that the fall Sunny took in the last episode symbolically represents her lapse into the darker recesses of her memory.

As the episode opens, Sunny finds herself confined within a studio set as the participant in an over-the-top game show. The depiction of the game show has a touch of magical realism to it, and viewers swiftly realize that the mock trial against Sunny is happening inside her own system.

Through flashbacks, Sunny confronts several memories that she had hitherto kept at bay. For instance, she had to acknowledge how she saw a homebot kill a man inside the basement on ImaTech. Shots from this murder were teased earlier, but its truth is revealed only in Sunny episode 9.

Viewers learn that homebots could get overly emotional and end up harming people. So Masa, their creator, extracted and stored their harmful elements in a file. This is The Dark Manual, a leitmotif in the series.

As Sunny reviews her own memory, she finds out that Tanaka, a co-worker of Masa’s, had treacherously put The Dark Manual back in all the homebots. That made the homebot prone to emotional extremes.

Sunny realizes that she too has traces of the Manual inside her system, and its side effects include getting violent when others get emotionally close to Suzie. When Sunny realizes that her frantic love for Suzie might end up harming her one day, it decides to wipe her own memory clean.

Sunny performs this act of self-sacrifice out of her love for Suzie. Sunny episode 9 shows that homebots are not mere clumps of metallic elements; they are capable of feeling the emotion of love as well.

Sunny episode 9 shows why Masa created homebots

Episode 8 of the show already showed several key events of Masa’s past. Sunny episode 9, though, depicts one crucial episode of his life: his transition from a simple engineer to a robotics engineer.

Masa reveals that his interest in homebots stemmed from his pondering over the question of how one can deal with the problem of loneliness. Masa had been lonely for much of his life, devoid of a father's affection.

According to Masa, homebots can help people dispel their loneliness. His beliefs are proven to be true when one beta homebot has a desired influence on Asahi, a man who has been extremely introverted all his life until he meets a homebot.

In episode 8, Masa’s father explained that Masa used robots as a means to enhance his understanding of human beings. Sunny episode 9 shows Masa in this light.

After one homebot ends up killing Asahi in the basement of ImaTech, Masa realizes that the bots are unstable entities who could swing to emotional extremes. Further, if word got out, the yakuza could contact him to make them killer robots especially equipped with The Dark Manual.

As a father and husband, Masa couldn't afford to be a target of the yakuza. So he shut down the program entirely, keeping only Sunny out of all the homebots. Sunny episode 9 shows that Masa decided to keep Sunny as a gift for Suzie, should something happen to him.

Sunny episode 10 will release on September 4, 2024, on Apple TV.
